The cause of death was pancreatic cancer. Beloved sister of Peter R. Mariani, his wife Rita (Noblesville, IN) and the late Donald J. Mariani, her sister-inlaw Jeanette L. Today is your birthday, Aunt Cess. A few of us are celebrating this day in your honor because you always loved birthdays and helped celebrate our birthdays with great festivity.

Jeanette also wanted to remind that you are both the same age for the next six months even though you always teased about being so much younger!

Happy Birthday. We are thinking about you today and always.

Dear Aunt Cess...where were you this Christmas? We have been doing all the things you like to do...like dinners with family and friends and Christmas cheer and laughter...presents and family time. Plays and walks in Central Park. I think you are here and we see your smiling face and toasted you many times for all the great laughs and fun and wonderful dinners and certainly fond memories. Thank you! A great example for all.

it was the summer of 1955 and Mom tells me that Aunt Cessie is coming to visit us at 225 Algonquin in Marquette Heights and I can hardly contain myself. I walk up the street a half block and climb a hill that gives me a vantage point. After what seems like forever, I see her blue 53 Chevy approaching from the north and by that time I run back to the front yard I am weeping uncontrollably with joy as she hugs me and Pookie and kisses away our tears.

I am enjoying reading so many words of gratefulness by friends who knew our "Aunt Cess". She touched so many lives in a positive way - bringing joy and hope to thousands of people in her life's journey. What a role model for all of us. Thank you for sharing these many thoughts and memories. Please encourage friends to write to the Guest Book. Her family so appreciates reading these words.

"It's not the altitude, it's the attitude" is one of my favorite quotes from Aunt Cess. It says it all. She was SUCH a wonderful person and we will miss seeing her when we visit our dear friends Jeanne and John Sullivan in NYC. When I think of her smiling face it makes me smile.

Dear Celeste,

We only knew you a short time but I was hoping for so much more. You made us enjoy our cruise around South America with your sunshiny attitude. Trivia games meant more because you were part of them. When last we saw you, this past holiday season in NYC for lunch, you were as alive and vibrant as ever. I will always remember you as you were when we said good-bye -- with your full length fur coat on and a bright red hat looking like a million dollars. I'm sure that where ever your are, you're impressing people with your charm and wit. We'll miss you!

Dear, dear Celeste, What a joy you were, and no doubt still are! I know you are looking down on us and telling us not to be sad, but we are because we can't see that beautiful smile of yours. Forgive us, we know you do! You were the very best TWA produced, and that is saying a lot! I will miss you. Love, Anne

To my good friend Celest:
Just looking at you made me smile and how often did that smile turn into laughter , with tears running down our cheeks. The tears are back, but I'm so sad, I can't even bid you a final farewell. I cherish the memories and I know the many TWA angels gone before you are welcoming you with open arms, "Heavens party" is just starting !
Until we meet again!
Love ya

Celeste always seemed to be having the most fun. She was upbeat, happy and enjoyed life. She was younger than her years and more active than others her age. She led a robust life up until the end. May she rest in peace.

My dear Celeste....
It was a trip to New Orleans some 20 years ago and then a cruise to Alaska that began our "odyssey" which was global on big ships, little ships, sailing vessels and motor vessels. The adventures were always exciting and fun because of your great positive outlook on life. Thank you for our dear friendship and will always treasure our many happy memories. I will miss you.

Anything I can say will be a duplicate of all the tributes to Celeste, whom I've known since my beginnings in Chicago. I'd like to offer a favorite verse which says more than I can.
Garden of Proserpine by Swinburne

From too much love of living,
From hope and fear set free.
We thank with brief thanksgiving
Whatever gods may be
That no life lives forever,
That dead men rise up never,
That even the weariest river
Winds somewhere safe to sea.

Rest in peace, dear Celeste

As a TWA Purser I was privileged to work with Celeste many times and to know her over many decades. Celeste is a wonderful, warm and caring person and was always a joy to be around. Her smile was infectious and her joy of living was as well. While Celeste is enjoying that first class service in Heaven, Celeste will always be in our hearts and will always bring a smile to our face. Thank you Celeste for allowing us to be part of your life.

Celeste, your death has left your Mariani family and your TWA family bereft.
We all loved and admired you, you little pixie! Your sparkling personality, your amazing attitude, your adorable face and haircut... oh, you will be missed for so many reasons.
It was such a treat to work with you because you were always calm in-flight; no crazy passenger or situation was so disastrous that you'd let it blow your cool.
I loved being on layovers with you, too. You didn't leave me, a junior "kid", behind in Rome or wherever; instead, you invited me to join you and your senior friends for dinner where we all sang and acted silly.
You were the perfect hostess and a wonderful role model for the rest of us, Celeste, and now you are among the real Trans World Angels; whoever gets you as a guardian angel will be very lucky indeed.

Next week will be our annual TWA Silverwings gathering of friends in Toronto, Canada. I cannot believe Celeste will not be there! She was a delight to be with both on and off the airplane and always brought out the best in everyone. Here's hoping your last flight was full of wonderful passengers, good weather,an on time arrival and a soft cloud landing. We will miss you terribly but your indomitable spirit will be with us in Toronto and ever after. Hugs and love, Judie and Jim Whitney

September 8, 2008

Always with a smile, a kind word or thought, Celeste was the woman we all wanted to be when we grew up. I remember particularly the eighth day of a ten day trip on a layover in Chicago. It was Palm Sunday and many of us were far from home. That evening, when she reported for duty, Celeste gave each of us a cross she had woven from palm leaves...a simple gesture so full of love, yet one I remembered and never failed to thank her for, every time we met.
Your life was a celebration. So too will be your life in eternity. God bless you, Celeste.

Please accept my deepest sympathies in your time of this great loss.
Celeste was my first purser on my first international flight on TWA. She taught me well and made sure we had a great time in Rome. She was so very kind to me, taking me under her wing. Because of her kind spirit, I tried to help all those who were junior to me--as she had shown me how. She was a wonderful lady--a true gem--one of a kind.
The Lord will be receiving a wonderful person in Celeste.
