I MET HIM IN FRANKLIN LAKES, NJ IN 1984. MY OFFICE WAS ABOUT 100' FROM HIS. I HAD HEARD OF HIS CONTACTS WITH PRESIDENTS, MOVIE STARS, SPORTS STARS AND WORLD LEADERS. ONE MORNING I GOT TO THE OFFICE EARLY. I WALKED PAST HIS OFFICE AND STOPPED AT THE DOORWAY TO LOOK AT THE PICTURES. I HEARD STEPS COMING DOWN THE HALL AND ABOUT DIED RIGHT THERE ON THE SPOT!
HE SAID: GOOD MORNING, MAY I HELP YOU! HE SET HIS BRIEFCASE ON THE DESK AND ASKED MY NAME. I AM KEN SMITH AND I WORK FOR...HE STOPPED ME! I KNOW EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE AND WHERE YOU HAVE WORKED SINCE 1965! HE STATED SOME OF CAREER ACCOMPLISHMENTS AS IF WE HAD KNOWN EACH OTHER SINCE HIGH SCHOOL! HE THANKED ME FOR MY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE OPD DIVISION! WE TALKED FOR MAYBE THREE MINUTES AND IT WAS ONE OF MY GREATEST MEMORIES! HE SAW ME MANY TIMES AFTER THAT IN FRANKLIN LAKES AND AGAIN IN MIAMI (AT AN IBM MEANS SERVICE AWARD BANQUET) AND WAS ALWAYS SO FRIENDLY!
I WILL FOREVER REMEMBER THOSE MOMENTS WITH GREAT PRIDE!
NOTE: I LEARNED OF HIS PASSING IN MARCH.2020 AT A LUNCHEON FOR RETIRED EMPLOYEES FROM MECHANICSBURG. DUE TO COVID.19 AND MY WIFE HAVING DEMENTIA, I DIDN'T FIND THE DETAILS ON THE INTERNET UNTIL TODAY. I WANTED TO SHARE MY EXPERIENCES.
REST IN PEACE!

I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the Biggar family. I thought he was an honorable person and a great leader for FE. As I enter my 41st year as an SSR now I can still remember running past him on the 3 mile run in Miami for my first Means service award and exchanging a few words and it left me with a smile on my face the rest of the run. Good bye Charlie, you were a good one.

To the Biggar family,
You don't know me, but I have been an IBMer for almost 38 years. Charlie was one of the people I respected the most in IBM during those years. There has never been another as sincere as Charlie was, in leading the service division. I first met him at the Phoenix Awards conference in 1978. This was my first conference since joining IBM in 1973. He sat next to me on a bus on the way to a cookout in the desert. He was so easy to talk to, like he was my neighbor, not a high executive in a Billion dollar company. I saw him many times in the following years at the Awards conferences, but the best was in 1987 when he shook my hand as he presented me with an IBM MEANS SERVICE ALL-STAR Award. I will cherish that picture for the rest of my life! He was an inspiration to my career. Although I was sad to see him retire that year.
I thought of him often after he left.
I hope & pray he had a wonderful retirement, despite his health issues.
As long as you keep the fond memories of Charlie in your mind, he will live in your heart forever. God Bless you in this difficult time.

My condolences to the Biggar Family in your time of sorrow. Although Charley is no longer with you, your memories of him continue. Cherish those memories, and the memories from all of us he touched in his professional life.
In my career, I had many opportunities to meet with Charley, and many excellent memories of those meetings. Regardless of the situation, my memory of Charley will always be of an Executive, a Leader, and most of all, a Gentleman who set an example for each of us to emulate. I will always cherish those memories.

I joined IBM in 1951 and had the opportunity to meet and work with many folks in different areas. Charlie was one of the finest, most capable man I can remember. His ability to convey his thoughts and ideas without arrogance and with a most friendly and supportive manner were just two if his strong points
Charley was truly a giant among men and I will never forget him

I have fond memories of Charley Biggar. I had an opportunity to play golf with Charley one time and Johnny Mathis was in our foursome, what a great time. He just made you feel at ease when you were around him, no matter who you were, you just felt good being around Charley. And he was great with names, never seemed to forget who you were. Charley always made you feel proud to work for IBM. His leadership was something I will never forget. God bless his family and friends.

I began my IBM career in Greencastle, Indiana. The site, over 30 years, took on several missions. I became one of Charlie's employees and worked with him as the site went thru the service business divisions. His leadership skills were never to be topped. The one that had the greatest impact on me was, after one meeting, I was in a NY airport, and someone walked up touched my shoulder and said "Hi Larry", I have never forgot that, given the number of new "faces" he encountered daily. He had a significant impact on how I approached my business and personal situations. Over the years he knew that. I would like for you to know that. Charlie was special in many ways to many people. Most of all I know how special he was to you. My warmest thoughts at this time to you.

To the Biggar Family,
I worked for and with Charlie at IBM over several years. He had real class and was a joy to know and be around. I will miss him greatly. At a golf tournament after he retired, I had a chance to tell him how special he as to me. Now, I'd like to say the same to you. He was indeed a VERY special person. May you find peace and joy in his memory.

To the Biggar family,
My wife and I offer our sincere condonlences during this period of sorrow for your family. We feel what you must have experienced during the time Charlie spent with the Parkinson's ailment. as we cared for my mother during her time with the illness. However as many others have stated, Charlie was a breadth of fresh air to the Service Division creating a human touch to management at the highest levels after years of the "untouchables". Remincing about Charlie with another IBMer he said "Now days, one sometimes hears the saying, 'It's no longer your father's IBM.' But it was in Charlie's day". May Charlie rest in peace in the company of our Savior.

Dear Pat,
It is with great sadness I learned about Charley. He and I shared so much in our lives and careers. Both Navy, CE's in NY, Instructors in Endicott, and Managers in NY, NJ and my wife Mary Jane was his Administrative Assistant when he made the transfer of the Presidents office to Franklin Lakes, NJ.
I'm so glad you have such a full gift of family life to help you cope with what has to be so great a loss. God Bless and keep you all in the Palm of His hand.

I had the pleasure of meeting Charlie a couple times during my career at IBM. He and I shared some moments discussing topics of mutual interest. I found him to be a very 'down to earth' gentleman with a wealth of knowledge on many things. I am proud to say that I carry his advice and musings with me to this day and I feel honored to have spent a few treasured moments with a truly great man. My only regret is that I never got to play a round of golf with him. May God bless his family and many friends. I know he will be missed.

To the Biggar Family: Please accept our condolences. My wife worked for IBM in White Plains and Dallas, I worked for IBM in Dallas and Hudson Valley. Charlie was the pillar of the first basic belief of IBM.
RESPECT FOR THE INDIVIDUAL. Charlie had that more than any other person. The lessons I learned under Charlie I still use today and I used the same three beliefs under my own company. I live near Franklin Lakes Charlies FE HQ and that big Office Products rock still stands there. I have been in several time and the free spirit of Mr. Biggar still stands. Thank you Charlie no one will ever know how much you gave us all and others. The massive earthquake in Mexico City and Charlie was the first to start the ball rolling for supplies.
May God Speed Sir

Sadden to hear about Charlie. My condolences to the family. IBM was the greatest when he was the President of FE. I had the great pleasure of meeting and shaking his hand more than once. As I was a CE at time, he had a way of making you feel special and that he truly had your best interest at heart. Phillips Petroleum in Bartlesville, Ok had a recognition dinner for all the CE's that took care of their account. (about 16 of us) They invited Charlie and he came. That was icing on the cake for all of us. Special memories. Great man and leader.

My wife, Alice, and I were deeply saddened to learn of Charlie's death.
I had the pleasure of working with Charlie on several programs while was in Executive Resources in Franklin Lakes. Charlie was the Division President at the time, and I was the Division coordinator for the Colgate University program. When Charlie became President of CSD, I coordinated the Syracuse Program. I still have the "Thinker" statue that he gave me after the last class graduated from the Colgate program. Charlie always had time to chat and made everyone feel he was interested, and he was.
Although words are inadequate at a time like this, I am sure that Charlie's presence will always be with his family. Please know that thoughts and prayers are with you. May God hold you in His arms and comfort you, and may the memories of happy times shared in the past help to ease your sorrow, and in time, bring smiles to your hearts.

May God Bless him and his family. Charlie was a great leader. I'll always remember working on Christmas Eve one year at 360 Hamilton as a PA. I look up from my desk, and here's Charlie with a smile and his hand out wishing me a Merry Christmas and telling me it's time to go home and be with the family. He made IBM Service the best in the world by caring about the people that delivered it so well. Great Man, Great Leader!

I remember with great fondness the years I spent working for Mr. Biggar in White Plains. He was a man of great faith and virtue, and I especially remember him as an exemplary family man. Many people will pass through our lives, but few will be remembered with such reverence and respect! May God bless his family with much hope during these difficult times.

Although he was the president of Field Engineering in IBM, he was always just plain "Charley" when he was with his CEs.
Although I never knew him as closely as many who have left messages, I always enjoyed his periodic visits to the Region 1 TAG when he would stop by my desk and we'd chat. He was always kind, considerate and friendly. He made us feel important because we KNEW he cared about us.
Leaders like Charley helped to make IBM what it was in its hey days and in my 35 years with IBM. My deepest sympathy to his loving family.

Charley Biggar was a great Executive. I had the privilege of being one of the first women Customer Engineers hired in Weschester County 'way back when'. My big break! I had an interview with Charley in Pearl River, NY when the Area was transferring to the city. He was looking to fill two positions, one for branch O&A Manager and the other for an Area Tech Support Manager. I took a NY shipping label off a shipping box and stuck it in the pocket of my suit so he would see it. He looked at the ticket, I told him I wanted to move with the area and we both shared a good laugh. Two weeks later he called me and told me I had the job. I went from a service planning manager to Area tech support manager which was a major leap of faith on Charley's part..but this was the man who was an IBM leader willing to take chance. I never forgot his faith in me . I want the family to know what a great person, leader and friend he was.

Dear Pat, Mary and family,
Being "just the secretary" in Albany........ you don't expect the President of Field Engineering and an IBM Vice President to know you by your first name.......it meant a lot to me.
When that person tells you what an outstanding secretary you are and what a phenomenal job you do for IBM, and presents you with an IBM All-Star Award, that, too, means more than you can imagine.
But when he calls the office one afternoon and says....."Hey Lor, I need a favor....I need you to order flowers for my Mother. Her birthday is in a few days and I can't make it there. Pick out something really beautiful....I know you'll make it perfect.....I trust your judgement.....oh, and here's my credit card number". Well, it doesn't get any more special than that........that personal trust and confidence meant a great deal to me.
Having his Mom, and you and Charley (as our Guest Speaker) at our IBM Family Dinner was such an absolute joy. Charley's thoughtful remarks made everyone's day.
Running into him at Awards Conferences or in the halls of HQ, everyone felt the same way.....he listened, he understood .....he truly cared. Charley was one of the reasons the "old" IBM meant so much to all of us.
It was an honor to know him. May he rest in peace.
I will keep you and your family are in my prayers,

To the Biggar Family,
I had the privledge of working for Charley, in the president's office, as one of his secretaries during the 1980s. I have many fond memories - - too many to document on this website. One thing I do know is that he loved his family very much. If he was in a meeting in his conference room and a family member called, he always wanted us to slip him a note so that he could take the call. He was a great man and will be missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family during this difficult time. Keep all the memories alive in your heart.

He was a true leader. He had a way of making you feel like you were part of a team, not just a number. I was proud to be a member of the FE Team. I have two memories that have never left me, one when HE reached out to shake my hand at an awards conference and another when he held an employee round table. In both cases you were left feeling that he would remember you, not just meet you. His passing brought back memories of the IBM I loved and I want his family to know his leadership made a lasting impression on me. My best to all of the family.

I met Charley Biggar face-to-face exactly once, when I was a lowly programmer at FEHQ.
One evening I was putting in some OT at 360 Hamilton Av, White Plains. Thank God I wasn't playing StarTrek! Suddenly, Charley popped his head in my office door and asked "Could you handle this for me?" and he handed me a note with a name and a phone number. Mine was the only office still lit up in the building, I guess. "Glad to help," I told him and he disappeared.
I called the number on the paper and asked the fellow what he needed. He was somewhere in the midwest and was calling on the internal phone network for information. All the tieline 'information' numbers were '8-xxx-1000' or '8-xxx-3000'. He dialed 8-374-3000 and went straight to the desk of the President of FE Division.
So I looked up the person he was trying to reach and gave him the number.
Some other high-ranking execs might have given the poor guy an earful. Not Charley. He was Biggar than that.
