CHARLES NEER Obituary

NEER--Charles Sumner, II. Columbia University Medical Center mourns the passing of Charles Sumner Neer II, M.D., a longtime distinguished member of our faculty and a pioneer in the field of orthopaedic and shoulder surgery. Dr. Neer spent his entire professional life at Columbia, having completed his residency in 1949, when he was appointed to our faculty, on which he served until his retirement in 1990 as Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery. Dr. Neer founded the first Shoulder Service in the 1970s, and his contributions to the field of shoulder and elbow surgery were truly unparalleled. He helped train generations of surgeons and developed novel procedures and prostheses, as well as establishing a fracture classification system that is now used by orthopaedic surgeons worldwide. We extend our condolences to his wife Eileen, son Charles Henry, daughters Sydney Neer-Rowland and Charlotte Neer-Annis, and the extended Neer family. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorial gifts be directed to Columbia Orthopaedics, Columbia University Medical Center, 622 West 168th Street, PH-11, New York, NY 10032.
