Charles Symington Obituary

SYMINGTON--Charles H., Jr."Charlie" "Soapy" Harrison Symington, Jr., 78, of Spring Island, South Carolina, husband of Bailey Walker Symington, died Wednesday morning, March 4, 2009. Born in Baltimore, Maryland on February 2nd, 1931, he was a son of the late Charles Harrison Symington, Sr. and the late Mary Towers Symington. Before retirement Charlie had been an investment banker in New York City with G.H. Walker; Warburg, Paribas, Becker; and S. G. Warburg. He was a graduate of Deerfield Academy ('49), Williams College ('53), and Harvard Law School ('56). He served on the Board of Governors of the National Association of Securities Dealers. He commuted to Wall Street for many years from Tuxedo Park, New York, and then from Princeton, New Jersey, before moving to New York City. He and his wife, Bailey, have lived in Spring Island, South Carolina for the past ten years. Throughout his adult life, Charlie contributed a unique blend of fiscal conservativism, social justice and laughter to school and civic boards. Tennis, golf and grandchildren kept him quick on his feet. His love of history, baseball and politics served as an extension of his unique way of observing and interacting with the people around him. His humor often won him the friendship of those whose politics and sports allegiances differed from his, even family members. Surviving are his wife, Bailey; his children Gaye Symington and her husband, Chuck Lacy, of Jericho, Vermont; Robin Ramos and her husband, Freddy Ramos, of Los Angeles, California; and Randolph Walker Symington and his wife, Megan King Symington, of Old Greenwich, Connecticut, and five grandchildren, Samuel, Mary and Tom Symington Lacy and Maya Anita and Bailey Rosa Ramos. He was well loved by his extended family of nieces, nephews, in-laws and cousins. A Celebration of Life service will be held in early April in New York City. In lieu of flowers, a gift may be made in his memory to The Spring Island Trust - 40 Mobley Oaks Lane, Okatie, South Carolina 29909.
