CURTIS BUTTENHEIM Obituary

BUTTENHEIM--Curtis R., 93, died March 12 at home in Dennis, MA after a brief illness. Born in Hastings-on-Hudson, NY on October 10, 1918, son of Edgar J. and Marian Voorhees Buttenheim, he was a 1936 graduate of The Taft School in Watertown, CT and a 1940 graduate of Yale University. In World War II Buttenheim was stationed in Calcutta, India where he attained the rank of Captain in the US Army. He taught at the Russell Ranch School in Tucson, AZ before joining the family business, Buttenheim Publishing Corporation, from which he retired as Vice President in 1975. During his career he resided in Lookout Mountain, TN; Ossining, NY; and Stockbridge, MA before moving to Dennis. A supporter of the arts wherever he lived, Buttenheim twice served as Co-Chair of the Council of Friends of Tanglewood in Lenox, MA, and was a member of the Board of Overseers of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. He was an early supporter of Shakespeare and Company and served as a Trustee of the Berkshire Country Day School, both in Lenox, and served as a Trustee of the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge. He was an early board member of the Cape Cod Museum of Art in Dennis. In 1953 Buttenheim married Patricia L. Johnson of Pittsburgh, PA, who survives him, as do their children, Lisa M. Buttenheim of Nicosia, Cyprus; Edgar J. Buttenheim II of Franklin, MA; Curtis R. Jr. of Los Angeles, CA; and Patricia M. Buttenheim of New York, NY. He is also survived by two grandchildren, James Curtis and Mary Catherine Buttenheim; a sister, Constance Swain of Sarasota, FL and brother Edgar M. of Princeton, NJ. A private funeral was held on March 17 in Barnstable, MA. Donations may be sent to the Taft School/Buttenheim Family Scholarship, 110 Woodbury Road, Watertown, CT 06795.
