James E (Jimm) Blagrave II
May 23, 2006
I met Dale in college at Texas A&M University. Some would say we looked almost identical to each other. Since we both have been mistaken one for the other, a few times. it happens that I was (even) once mistaken for him by his own grandmother, in Huntsville Texas. She and I were each on opposite sides of the street, when she started waving and shouting Dale!, Dale!. That was how I learned a little more about our family history; about his brother who died in a motorcycle accident, and about my grandfather's relationship to his grandfather. As I said, Dale and I met in college by accident. I was an Electrical Engineering Student while Dale was a Industrial Engineering student. Dale was about 2.5 years my elder, and slightly shorter than I. Our Meeting occurred as a result of a typographical error, on the part of the resident dormatory manager (RA). That was because the resident manager at Aston Dormatory (at Texas A&M) had put the wrong names on our doors. He had put Dale's name on my door and my name on Dale's door. When we went downstairs to see who was the guy named Dale Blagrave, that had mistakenly had his name put on my door, it was an event that could not have been foretold, except in a Blagrave story (you Blagrave descendants all know what I mean). If you could have seen the manager's face, when he saw us in that hallway together... He thought, for certain, we were playing a trick on him. He really believed that as identical as we looked to each other, we had to be brothers. We had never met before. And, I had never heard of Dale before that day. Ironic, they say we all have a twin somewhere in the world. Who would have ever believed that the closest person to a twin to me, would grow up, and attend High School in Bedias Texas, while I was attending High School in North Zulch Texas (only 25 -30 miles away). But- not just that! He did not only happen to look nearly identical to me, but he would also have the same last name (Blagrave). I am James E Blagrave II. Dale was my cousin. His grandfather (Ruben)and my grandfather (Elbert) were (I believe) double-first cousins and shared uncles of each other's father as well as aunts of each other's mother. The last time I spoke with Dale i had called him in 2000 while he was still in California (Glendale I believe. He said he had contracted cancer and had had problems (I think shoulder blade and bone structure). He mentioned moving to Ny area to work for a bookstore (he had left working in the industrial Safety Engineering field apparently. I want to expess my sadness and sympathy for Ashley and beth as well as his friends, and Dean for their loss. Although we seldom were in touch, we would always have that special kiship between each other, so uniqie and so ironically Blagrave-esque (for lack of a better term). I am sorry and saddened to have lost this very special person in my life.
Rest peacefully, my spiritual brother, my cousin. May we meet again in heaven, in Jesus' arms- may he give you peace and rest.
