I had been avoiding the calls from the office ... Because I had presumed it was Daniel calling me to berate me to get this damn crown fixed. I found out today, 6 months after his passing that he had left us. Daniel, without realizing it, was a huge and important part of my life. I moved out here 9 years ago from the UK and was warmly welcomed into his office and (of course) quickly fell in love with him. We loved to tease each other and he came to see me in shows... Spiderman being his favorite. My name quickly became Spidey and he never let me live it down. Daniel your heart, humor and generosity are an example for us all. I will never forget you. Even now when I close my eyes I can see you smiling and making fun of me. Thank you good Friend. For reminding us all that love and openness should be easy. The world is a stronger place thanks to the years of joy you shared with us while you were here.

I just learned about Dan's passing when I called for an overdue appointment last week. Before calling, I had been going through many conversations I would have with him in my mind about his work on my teeth and our mutual families once I would be in his office.
When Rose said she had some unhappy news to tell me, I thought it would be about Dr. Rudolph's retirement.
It was devastating news and since hearing it I've had so many memories -- and many tears.
I was a patient at 69 West 9th Street before Dr. Dan was a dentist there. That's how long I've known him -- since he began his practice -- probably early 70s. I started there in 1965. We were both young.
We shared many personal stories over the years -- through singledom, marriages, children and grandchildren.
When my first child was born and my parents came from Florida to meet her at a week or two old, my mother happened to break a piece off one of her front teeth.
I took her to Dr. Rudolph for an emergency visit and he proceeded to build her a perfect looking new front tooth. He told her it may not last very long -- but it did -- until her death at least 20 years later.
And, he did not charge her. He told her it was a gift for becoming a grandma.
He was always trying to do the best he knew how in working on people with not very healthy teeth -- and was a true artist in his field.
It will be difficult walking into the office knowing I'll never see Dan again. I can only imagine what the others in this unusually warm and welcoming low keyed practice are feeling.
And to his family -- my heart and good wishes are with you.
The good news is that Dan will remain a shining light in the lives of all who got to know him -- on what ever level it was.
He gave so much and hopefully what he gave to us will be passed on to others.

Terribly sorry to hear that Il Dottore Dan has passed. I was a patient of his for a decade, and he was by far the best dentist and easily the most fun professional person I've been privileged to know in my life. My condolences to his family, friends, and the wonderful staff at the office, especially Rose, who was always so kind to me and my wife Georgene Shelton

I've been a patient of Susan's for ages, and always enjoyed a chat with Dan Rudolph, often about family and basketball. The last time I saw him (April, I believe), he was thoughtful to ask how my oldest basketball-loving son was doing.

I'm so saddened to learn of this today. Rest In Peace my deepest condolences to his family.

Dr. Rudolph was a friend of our family for many years, and we are very saddened by his passing. I remember seeing, as I would wait for my appointment, so many friends stopping in just to catch up with him. It was a tribute to how loved and special he was to so many... His memory and youthful spirit will live on forever in our hearts. May he rest in peace. Our deepest condolences and sympathies to his family.

Dear Nancy, Larry Grant, and I were-- and are-- devastated by the news that Dan passed. He was our dentist and friend for more than 40 years. We were among the numerous outer planets among Dan's patients, nevertheless very much under the gravitational force of his top-level expertise, generosity, compassion, and joie de vivre. We did not socialize with Dan-- except once when he generously took us to lunch at Rosemary-- but we felt (separately and as a couple) that he was someone we knew and loved, beyond his professional role as our dentist. We loved exchanging opinions with Dan about restaurants, travel, theater, R&B, politics, developments in the Village, and--not least-- the often fraught experiences of growing into senior adulthood. Personally, I can't think of anyone I admired more, and I'm sure Larry feels the same. Larry and I offer our deepest condolences to you and your family. Sincerely, Richard Kelso and Larry Grant

Danny was a cool guy. Extended himself for people. Was liberal way before it was vogue. What a mensch. Great sense of "tongue in cheek" humour. Rated high on my "likable" list. Sad to see him go ...

WOW JUST FOUND OUT! Wish I'd known. He was my dentist (and my late wife and present wife as well.) A dear friend, great listener, for over 40 years, who knew all my secrets. The one and only Doctor R, the disco dentist, B-baller, irreplaceable TRUE NEW YORKER.

He was my dentist for about fifteen years (which makes me a newcomer), and I liked him so much I kept on with him even when I moved to Maine because of his warmth and humor. I'm not a basketball guy, so we talked about the theater a lot. I loved having a dentist who went to it regularly and who'd been a fixture in the Village for so many years. He was one of a kind and I'll miss seeing him.

Such a lovely guy! Always took time to chat with me whenever I came to see Dr. Stern. He loved that my father signed a book for him with "To Dan, A village institution." We talked about that, his knees, his basketball., how I'd always break a tooth whenever Dr. Stern was on vacation and he'd have to take care of me! Used to run into him at the Knickerbocker where we'd each be eating with our families and he was always so sweet to say hello to us all. I am shocked and so saddened at his passing. I will really miss him. My condolences to his family and all the folks at Rudoph-Stern.

My friend (and my dentist) the entire time I lived in NYC. Brilliant dentist (along with Susan) and a brilliant, caring gentle man. I cannot imagine how his family and STAFF are handling his passing, but know that he would want you to celebrate his life, not grieve his passing. Love and thoughts to his family and to Susan and Rose, especially.

Dr. Rudoplh was one of the kindest, happiest and most gracious men I have ever known. A family friend for nearly 40 years and a mentor of mine when I first moved to New York City, practically a brother to my father. Our hearts are heavy with his passing. He will be greatly missed. Thank you for everything Danny.

Dr R, the Greenwich Village Dentist who turned my most aprehensive hate into anticipatory happiness for going to the dentist when I was just a kid. My mother Barbara worked with Dr. R from the inception of his practice until five years ago. He was always kind, inquisitive, thoughtful & advisable about my plights & plans for the future. I was thinking of him this past week, about it being his 73rd birthday next month and how I was going to have to make it a point to go visit & surprise him but God had other plans for his most endearing spirit . Although I had not seen him for quite a long while, when we spoke it was like I just saw him the day before, that's how comfortable he could make one feel. It was never out of sight, out of mind for me. The loss to his family is insurmountable...to his friends, co-workers, collegues, unfathomable. My most sincerest condolences to all who were fortunate enough to have loved, liked & adored Dr.R, a man I shall never forget.

Going to Dr. Rudolph's office was a bit like going to a marvelous salon party...you never knew who'd be in the waiting room, who you'd strike up a conversation with. And, Dan Rudolph was the consummate host, 'tummler'. Dear Dr. R., may you 'lie like a lox' on a beach for all eternity.

Dr. Rudolph was our family dentist back in the 70's. My whole family loved him. In fact I think EVERYONE loved him. He was a great dentist and made you feel more like you were visiting a friend when you came to see him. My fondest memory was, as a teenager, when I had a bad reaction to nitrous oxide. He actually walked me home to make sure I was ok. Years later I moved away to Ohio to pursue a career in Podiatric Medicine but was in NY for an extended stay a few years ago. I stopped by to say, hi and to thank him for his kindness and caring so many years ago. He greeted me with a gentle bear hug after 45 years. That was the kind of man he was. This world is a little sadder now but the memories will last forever.
My deepest heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

In a world where meaness and deceit and lack of humanity are the apparent norm, Dan Rudolph was the exception. The world is poorer without Dan. We met him in 1973 and he became a dear friend very quickly. Remembering Dans finding Nancy suddenly in his life with such total joy , was a delight to see for those who loved him. Words at times like these are never adequate, but if Nancy and the children remember the joy he derived from them, it hopefully will make the days pass easier. With great love and affection, Dick Duane and Bob Thixton

44 years, my dentist, my family, my kids and extended family all became part of his circle of patients who he cared for and loved.

Typical Dan: "We'll wait on that bottom tooth until next time so we can go have lunch." Bendel's, Lox/Clock, Pipeline, the kids, our various spouses, basketball, vacations, nachas, tsuris .. all.

Daniel was a kind and generous man. He watched over me and my kids.

He loved his family even more than basketball.

My condolences to his family. He will continue to live in all of us.

Danny was a one of a kind.
He was my friend and dentist for over 40 years. They say that everyone is replaceable. Not true with Danny. Although he was not a household name per se, He was a new York icon and celebrity in every sense of the word. To say that he will be missed is an understatement. His loving family, friends and clients are all in shock. I know I am. G-d Bless you Danny, and thank you for everything. You were and always will be such a light. May your memory be a blessing.

I worked for Dr. Roudolph as a temp assistant/front desk for approximately 1 year, and it was truly a pleasure! After about a month we discovered that we both loved basketball, and from then on; we would go back and forth about our favorite teams, and we'd agree to disagree about the finals and who'd take it all the way! I loved his trash talk, and admired the fact that he still played basketball and enjoyed his Thursday's with friends! He will forever be missed! ❤ Nia!
