DANIEL STOLPER Obituary

STOLPER--Daniel John. Musician and teacher, died June 9 at age 85. Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University, Dan also taught for nearly 50 years at Interlochen Center for the Arts and served for nearly that long as oboe editor for the Journal of the International Double Reed Society. Over the course of his career, Dan played principal oboe with several American orchestras, and toured widely. He was internationally renowned as a teacher and his students populate orchestras worldwide. Famous for his personality fully as much as for his pedagogy, Dan's compassion and kindness touched all who knew him. Survived by husband, David Kimball, sister-in-law, Bonnie Stolper, nephew, Brad Stolper, and nieces, Julie Stolper Dieckelman and Sherry Barrett.

I know that my late husband, the oboist Robert Bloom, would want me to remind Dan's husband David and his entire family and the entire oboe family that we cherish Dan's artistry and his contribution to the art of oboe playing. He was a kind and generous man and is dearly missed.

Thank you for providing me an annual opportunity to remember Dan Stolper--though it is not nearly often enough given Dan's lifetime of devotion to nurturing pupils and supporting colleagues as we joined him in the pursuit of artistry as a means of making the world a better place. Requiescat in pace, Dan. We miss you.

Dan's family, former pupils, and friends should know that he is well-remembered and will continue to be considered one of the finest oboists/teachers of his generation as we all continue to mourn his passing. Sara Lambert Bloom

I can't put into words how much of a difference Dan made in my life. I studied with him in the summers of 85 and 86, and during the Academy year 86-87. Dan was kind, wise, delightful, funny, and patient. My roommate (also an oboist) used to draw cartoons about the oboe crowd, and he put them up on the wall of his studio. I remember once when we played Christmas carols on reeds outside the studio door, and he welcomed this with his big laugh. Every day I employ what Dan taught me, not just about the oboe, but about life. I know Dan is part of the music of the spheres now.

Daniel Stolper was that rare musician who had the ability to take great joy in making music, devoting his life to all that is required to play the oboe at his high level of artistry, but whose generosity of heart did not stop there. He was teacher, mentor, and friend to many generations of oboists and additionally, he guided the contributors to the Journal of the International Double Reed Society with intelligence and sensitivity, resulting in the Journal becoming a valuable repository of articles that chronicle his long and fascinating era. Requiescat in pace. We were lucky to have your leadership; you will be long remembered. Love and our condolences to David and extended family.
