I met Daphne during a short course at Schumacher College in Devon where we spent afternoons in the forest around a fire listening, telling stories. After several early mornings together in rich conversation we realized we should exchange names. When Daphne told me hers, I said "oh, two of my favorite flowers." Silence in the room. Daphne said the spelling is different. As one with a childhood in the state of Oregon where the coastal town of Astoria has an Astor column and my own family has New England roots, enough American history surfaced for me to connect some dots. We quickly returned to our interests in life love Art grandchildren the breadth of complexities. It felt like the conversation only paused or found formats to continue over time. I miss Daphne deeply, thankful for saved emails and her voice in my ear. She feels like a sister, rooted, grounded, eternal.
