DARYL LIBOW Obituary

LIBOW--Daryl.

The lawyers and staff at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP mourn the tragic loss, at age 59, of our partner Daryl Libow. Daryl died on November 7 in Washington, D.C. following a valiant battle with cancer. Daryl's wife, Beth, and his two daughters, Jess and Claudia, are and always will be part of our family. Daryl spent his entire 32- year career at Sullivan & Cromwell, joining the Firm as an associate following his graduation from Cornell Law School. As an associate, Daryl worked at the Firm's offices in New York and London. After his election to the partnership in the fall of 1993, Daryl moved to Sullivan & Cromwell's Washington office, where he became the office's managing partner in 2006. A leader of our litigation group and the co-head of our antitrust practice, Daryl built a remarkable career as a litigator and trusted counselor, working on numerous complex antitrust and securities matters and other bet-the- company disputes. Daryl practiced before the Department of Justice, various federal agencies, and federal and state courts throughout the country, representing foreign and domestic companies in their most important cases, transactions and investigations. The trust his clients placed in him was such that companies of the stature of British Airways and BP returned to him for decades with their most critical matters. The crowning moment of Daryl's career, cementing his standing as one of the country's top lawyers, was his 2015 representation of BP in its historic settlement with federal, state and local governments relating to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. Beyond his distinguished legal practice at Sullivan & Cromwell, Daryl was a member of the boards of the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, the Ellington Fund at the Duke Ellington School of Arts in Washington, and Human Rights First. He was also a member of the Dean's Advisory Council of Cornell Law School and served on the Board of Trustees of Maret School. We are blessed to have shared the last three decades with Daryl. To us, he was so much more than the sum of his many professional accomplishments. He was a loyal and selfless friend, a mentor and role model, a diehard sports fan, a down-to- earth presence, and a warm and generous spirit, blessed with great wit and brilliant insights. Daryl was simply the best among us. We share our profound loss with everyone who knew, loved and respected him.

So sorry for Daryl's tragic and untimely loss. I had just left S&C when he arrived, but years later he became a loyal and generous supporter of our work at the National Law Center on Homelessness & Poverty. I remember his kindness and modesty at our annual dinner--he didn't have to come, but he did. We will all miss him. Love to Beth and the family. Maria

What a heartbreaking loss this is! I'll never forget when Daryl moved to Westport in high school. I was so taken with his smarts, determination and kindness, I felt so lucky to have this new friend. Although we hadn't seen one another much over the years, we always managed to stay connected. We were all so proud of his many accomplishments and huge heart. Love to the family.

Daryl was a mentor and friend. I wrote my first brief for Daryl as a summer associate 18 years ago. Nearly a decade later, we were singled out in open court for having submitted what our judge described as one of the finest briefs he'd ever read. Daryl gave me all the credit. Because of course he did. The night before that hearingwhich featured a murderers' row of litigators (including the then private-sector Jeh Johnson)Daryl took me to my first jazz club. No better prep for an argument representing one of the largest corporations on the planet than a night of jazz, he counseled.

I am heartbroken for his family and friends, and for the larger S&C family.

Daryl Libow was someone you always remembered meeting. As an adversary, he was formidable. As a friend, he was hilarious. As a person, he was kind. I will remember him fondly, always.

A friend for 20+ years, I respected, admired, and valued Daryl for his unstinting dedication to his family, to jazz, and to human rights. May his legacy live on and on.

Daryl was a dear friend and mentor to (my husband) Pete and while I haven't seen him in awhile, I remember that he was always so funny, kind, smart and great company. Sending condolences to his family and wishing them strength to get through this.

Daryl and I were friends in London while I was on a program with his sister Lindsay and he was at LSE. We lost touch over the years but I see he achieved everything he set out to do, as I knew he would. He was exceptional as a young man, so much so that his passing is having a profound effect on me, even after all these years. My prayers are with his family.

Daryl, you will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with your family. You were my foil in the legal world, but it was always done with class, humor and great friendship.
