DAVID LINCOLN Obituary

LINCOLN--Rabbi David H., devoted community leader, scholar and Conservative rabbi, died Sunday, he was 86. Born in London in 1937, he was ordained an Orthodox rabbi in Jerusalem and studied at the Gateshead Yeshiva in northern England. He was rabbi in Portsmouth, England and then in 1967, moved to the U.S. with his wife Susan, where he joined the Conservative movement. Lincoln served as rabbi at several congregations, first in Kansas City at Beth Shalom, then Chicago at B'nai Zion, at Beth Hillel in Wilmette Illinois and most recently at The Park Avenue Synagogue in New York from 1987 until his retirement in 2008. Lincoln was an active participant in many Jewish organizations and causes, including support for Israel. He was a passionate advocate for interfaith relations, in particular between Jews and Christians in Poland and Ukraine. He travelled extensively to visit at risk Jewish Communities in places like Yemen, Syria and Ethiopia, and across eastern Europe. He met with many political and religious leaders, including two serving Popes, U.S. Presidents and Prime Ministers of Israel. His significant scholarship included various rabbinical treatises on Jewish law as well as the history of Jewish political autonomy in independent Ukraine from 1918-1919. He is survived by his children Sara, Simon and Jonathan and seven grandchildren, Natasha, Samuel, Jacob, Clementine, Gisele, Asher and Dorothy.

Rabbi Lincoln was an inspiration to our young family at Park Avenue Synagogue. He married us, officiated several occasions for us, was a driving force behind my daughter´s bat mitzvah, gave us hours of perspective, kindness, guidance, wisdom, and was simply adored. He will live on in my heart always. A great man. Thank you,

Rabbi Lincoln had a profound and lasting impression on me when I was an early adolescent in Kansas City. He lived in a sketchy neighborhood, so a friend and I walked him home from shul on Friday nights. He was a very special person and understood how to reach every Jew through his wisdom and sensitivity. I´m a better person to have known him.

My family and I; notably my late Mother, Miriam Wocasek, of blessed memory, remember how wonderful Rabbi Lincoln was. We loved his sermons, his family and his presence was bigger than life! His legacy continues at Beth Hillel (now Beth Hillel B'Nai Emunah in Wilmette, Il). May G-d grant much strength to Sara, Simon and Jonathan at this difficult time, and, May Rabbi Lincoln rest in peace and may his memory be for a blessing. Amen.

Rabbi Lincoln was a wonderful friend, colleague and mentor. I will miss him and will particularly miss exchanging fascinating rabbinic responsa with him as we did for many years. My condolences to his wonderful children and grandchildren. May his memory be an everlasting blessing!
