DAVID MAGEE Obituary

MAGEE--David B., Sr. Died peacefully in White Plains Hospital on March 11th after a short illness. David Magee was born in Kuling, China, of Episcopal (Anglican) missionary parents. His father, the Reverend John Gillespie Magee Sr., served as priest-in-charge of the American Church Mission in Nanking (now Nanjing), China, from 1912 to 1940. His mother, Faith Emmeline Backhouse, went to China as a missionary from the Church of England in 1919. They were married in Kuling in 1921. In 1937, during 'the Rape of Nanking' by the Japanese, David Magee's father played a key role as a member of the International Committee for the Nanking Safety Zone. At that time Magee Sr. filmed the atrocities committed by the Japanese soldiers. In 2002 David Magee went to Nanjing and presented the home-movie camera used by his father in 1937 to the Nanjing Massacre Memorial Hall. After early schooling at the Hillcrest American School in Nanking, David Magee was enrolled at St. Clare School in Kent, England, which was near the family home. He then attended Charterhouse School, where he became an accomplished cricketer. With the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939, the family settled in the United States, where Magee continued his education at the Hotchkiss School, graduating in 1943. He served in what was then the U.S. Army Air Corps until 1945, when he left the Army with the rank of First Lieutenant. After the War, he completed his education at Yale, graduating in 1949 as an English major. Magee subsequently joined what was to become the Morgan Guaranty Trust Co. in New York, where he served for almost 30 years as an investment portfolio manager, retiring as a Vice President. He was married in 1950 to the late Helen J. Rice, of Brooklyn, with whom he had four children. He was later married for 43 years to Frances W. Bernhard of Rye, N.Y. As a resident of Rye, Magee was a member of Rye Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder and sang in the choir for many years. David B. Magee is survived by his wife, Frances, and his four children: Martha Rice Magee of Martha's Vineyard; David B. Magee Jr. of Salt Lake City; John G. Magee III of Fort Lauderdale; and Mary Moore Magee of Salt Lake City; also by a brother, Canon F. Hugh Magee of St. Andrews, Scotland. He is also mourned by his wife Frances' four children, her grandchildren, a niece, and three nephews, all of whom cared for him deeply. David Magee was predeceased by his brothers, Christopher W. Magee Sr. and Pilot Officer John Gillespie Magee, Jr., author of the well-known sonnet, High Flight. A memorial service will be celebrated at Rye Presbyterian Church on Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Rye Presbyterian Church.

I am responding for Edith Manchester(née Roberts) who is unable to communicate in any meaningful way. She told me stories of growing up in China and knowing the Magees who were her god-parents. I know she wrote a letter or two to David and enjoyed talking about reconnecting. I am sorry for the loss to the Magee relatives and friends around the world.

Dear Franny ~ My heart and love reach out to you to at this sad (yet celebratory!) time. My father loved you and needed you so much ... and you were there for him (and for us) every
step of the way. That he lived to the ripe old age of 87 is a
tribute to you and your unceasing devotion. Our gratitude
(and his) is beyond measure, a testament to your undying
LOVE ... we are eternally grateful ... the friction falls away ~
is now dross ... the LOVE is what remains ... and is all that
matters. My father loved you so very much and always will ~
and his children will always love you too, with our whole hearts. Love is ALL. David, Jr. XO

I visited you after your surgery. I did not want to say goodbye, knowing it might be the last time I see you on this journey on earth.
You said "I could not thank you enough when I did the translation for your presentation at your church International Day. I said " I, and the Chinese people could never thank you enough."
I have not met another Christian better than you. You are always in my heart.

Thank you for being my friend.

Dear Papa ~ While I am inconsolable at the loss of you, what comes fast behind is a flood-tide of gratitude for the incalculable loving acts you bestowed upon us all. My heart and mind are filled with a patchwork quilt of precious memories floating, dancing upon the heavenly clouds carrying you to Heaven ... especially flashes of the early years ~ the splendiferous birthday parties, the warm twinkling Christmases and magical Christmas morns at 520, the perfectly chosen gifts, the bike rides in Central Park, the car
trips to Jones Beach (in the blue Ford), the years at 130 E. 94th St. (with Lala & Aunt Min upstairs!), the Christmas parties
across the street at Rollo Thompson's townhouse, with our dear friends the Acevedos, dinners at The Cattleman (riding
shotgun on the horse-drawn carriage!), Lonchamps, Chinese
dinners at Tin Tsen at 125th street, XMAS luncheons at The House of Morgan Bank (wax-paper wrapped turkey sandwiches) & visits with Santa, your famous liverwurst sandwiches and listening to sound effect records, our birthday party at the NYPD Police Academy, countless rounds of golf (and countless strokes!) with you and your dearest friend Clinton Smullyan, your sweet goodnight lullaby singing to us ... the memories are endless ~ as is our LOVE for you. You shall never really leave us ... you are with us now as ever, increasingly so. You taught us so much ! We are grateful beyond words to both you and Franny ... We shall be with you again ... and soon. I miss you so very, very much ~ I LOVE YOU with my whole heart ... and I always will.
ALL MY LOVE, YOUR LOVING SON, DAVID XXXXXOOOOO

Dear Mr. Magee,

Thank you and your father for the contribution to the history of The Rape of Nanking. Our daughter Iris Chang was at the occasion when you generously donated the camera (which your father used to capture the images of atrocities of The Rape of Nanking in 1937 in Nanjing) to the Nanjing Museum for the victims of Nanjing Massacre. My husband and I had the honor met you in 2010 in NYC. All the Chinese people will remember your humanitarian deeds and your noble spirit of justice! Please rest in peace!

Mr. Magee was great to me as a kid growing up in NYC. He took me along with David and John to John Jay Park for swimming, Carl Schurz for climbing on rocks, to Mets games and lunch at the Pontiac. He was an elegant but completely approachable man (he even drove a car elegantly). I remember eating liverwurst sandwiches in his apartment on 79th Street. There was a poster there of Humphrey Bogart or Clark Gable (I can't remember which). On his refrigerator were some political buttons from the 1950s and a picture of him with friends at college in a car with (I think) a big Dewey for President sign. I can still hear his baritone voice calling one of sons sons over to his side.

Mr. Magee was great to me as a kid growing up in NYC. He took me along with David and John to John Jay Park for swimming (and one time to the pool at Julia Richman), Carl Schurz for climbing on rocks, Mets games, and lunch at the Pontiac. I remember eating liverwurst sandwiches in his apartment on 79th Street which had a poster of Humphrey Bogart or Clark Gable (I can't remember which). He also had a few political buttons from the 1950s and a picture on his refrigerator of he and some friends at college. I recall him as an elegant yet completely approachable man (he even drove a car elegantly) with a quiet sense of humor that was well worth straining to hear. I can still hear his baritone voice calling one of his sons over to his side.
