David Mandl Obituary

MANDL--David. David Mandl, noted New York architect and mensch, died at home in Manhattan August 4, 2007, at age 53. The cause of death was pancreatic cancer, diagnosed in January 2006. He is remembered and missed for his designs, mainly of NYC residential high rises, his business acumen, mentoring abilities and for an offbeat sensibility his friends called Planet David. He shared his home and world travels with his wife of 26 years, Anita Boggia Mandl. He is also survived by his parents, Otto and Ina Mandl of Baldwin, L.I., sister Susan Mandl of Rochester, NY, aunt and uncle Edith and Irving Hamberger, cousin Richard Hamberger (Carol), niece Renee Boggia and nephew Peter Boggia, both of New York, as well as brothers in law Richard and David Boggia of Branford, CT. The family is grateful to Hillel Tobias, MD, Mitchell Gaynor, MD, Continuum Hospice, home care aide Donna Gregg and numerous loyal friends who were supportive during his illness. Anita Mandl will receive visitors to share remembrances of David on Thursday August 9th at 280 Park Avenue South, NYC 5pm-10pm. Parents, Otto and Ina Mandl and sister Susan Mandl will be receiving on Friday August 10th at their home, 1419 Eva Court, Baldwin, LI from 3pm-8pm. Contributions in memory of David Mandl can be made to Pratt Institute, 200 Willoughby Street, #219, Brooklyn, NY 11205. A memorial tribute is planned for early October.

My time working for David for fourteen years remains to this day 'the best job I ever had!' and full credit goes to the nurturing and encouraging environment he created. He put a lot of faith in my abilities and made me believe I could do anything. I blossomed under that faith and carried that confidence to my subsequent jobs. I will forever be grateful for that opportunity and for his good humor and sense of fairness. He was a great boss and a wonderful friend and I'll carry those good memories forever.

Dear Anita, Susan, Ina, and Otto,
My thoughts and prayers are with you on this first anniversary. Thank you so much for sharing all your David stories with me on my last visit and inviting me to stay both in his childhood home and his magnificently designed home in Manhattan. It really gave me a sense of what a remarkable guy he was! I wish I had known him.

A little piece of David will always be carried with me. My sincere condolences to David's wife Anita, his mon and dad, sister and his extended family.

Anita and family,
I only really knew David through my sister, Carol Noteboom, but I feel like I have lost a friend as well. I have heard so much about him through the years! I see the Mandl name often on the shirts my 80-year-old dad wears with pride. David's left a big hole in your hearts for sure, but I know he leaves you with so many great memories and much to be proud of. My prayers continue to be with you during this difficult time.

I will always remember David as the quintessential New Yorker - creative, driven, successful and wonderfully eccentric. He left his mark on the city he loved in the many projects he designed and constructed that will serve as a lasting tribute to his artistic genius. His is probably already negotiating with the Divine power on a redesign for the gates of heaven and will, undoubtedly, get the job.

David was my cousin, but he was really my brother and he was certainly my best friend. He was a great person in more ways than one and the World is a lesser place since his passing. My deepest condolences to his amazing wife Anita, my aunt Ina and uncle Otto and my cousin Susan. Love you all.

I will always remember David with a smile. He had a wonderful sense of the ridiculous and always had his own unique slant on things. He will be greatly missed and leaves a gaping hole in the universe. My deepest sympathy and prayers go out to Anita and the family.

David was a staunch advocate for his clients. He delighted in demonstrating his knowledge of code and zoning to me. I want to extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends. He will be greatly missed.
