David Murray Obituary

1940 - 2020
David Lee Murray - July 1, 1940 - November 10, 2020

David Lee Murray passed away on November 10, 2020, in Silver Spring, MD, after a courageous struggle with Parkinson's disease. He was surrounded by members of his loving family.

David was a kind and gentle man who moved through life with eloquence and an invisible grace. He loved literature, poetry, music, art, and travel. His most profound love was his family. He shared his knowledge generously, and was gifted with a wonderful wit, a bright laugh, and endless, intellectual curiosity.

David is survived by his wife of 30 years, Linda Wien Murray, and his children Lise Fitzpatrick, Susan Murray, Kathleen Schulte, Christine Murray, Emma Lash (Aaron), Samuel Murray (Samantha Freedman), seven grandchildren and one great grandson. His son Brian Murray predeceased him.

David received a BA in English Language and Literature/Letters from the University of Cincinnati, and an MLIS from Indiana University, Bloomington. He served as Executive Director of the Library at Brookdale Community College, in Lincroft, NJ, for 23 years. There, he was instrumental in the design and implementation of the Bankier Library, a state of the art Learning Commons. Prior to Brookdale, David served as the Library Director for Upsala College, Associate Professor- Head Librarian, URI Providence, and Librarian, University of Cincinnati, Raymond Walters College.

David was born on July 1, 1940, in Hamilton, Ohio, to Julius P. Murray and Anna G. Murray. He is also survived by his dearest friends William Benton and David Polk, and his brother Leonard Murray.

A private memorial service will be held this summer.

Grateful donations can be made in David's memory to MichaelJFox.org, Parkinson.org, or a charity of your choice.

David was always a polite gentleman when I interacted with him. That is, unfortunately, a rare trait in today's rushed, aggressive culture.

Dear Linda, Emma, Sam, and all your family: I am so sad to read of David's passing. You have my deepest sympathy. I will always remember David from our best days in the library when we had a celebration or an improvement -- which would have been from his direction. Wishing you peace in your hearts. Warmest regards, Sharon Joseph

How can quiet kindness, a discriminating mind, and a mature modesty make such a strong and indelible impression? He was a man, none of us is perfect, but he was so much of what we always hope to become: a great father, warm, generous, civil, tolerant...firm in his values, but imaginative in understanding others. We all feel the loss. We feel for his immediate family: Linda, the children and grand children. But what a great legacy and example he leaves us.
