This extremely late memory for Mr. Roth is my way of saying "Thank you," for his understanding and compassion when I was quite young and without resources to pursue a career in social work.
Mr. Roth awarded me a fellowship but, due to my youth and inexperience, I managed to lose that source of support. Fortunately, I chose another direction in life that enabled me to complete that unfinished business of a social work education on my own terms, but at an age when most people think of the pleasures of retirement.
I believe that Mr. Roth would be pleased if he knew how I am changing the world today.

Dear Phyllis, Amy, Eric and Susan,
We are very sad to hear of your loss, and please know that our thoughts are with you. Dave made many meaningful and lasting contributions throughout his life. He will continue to enrich your lives as you cherish memories of his kindness and wisdom.
Best wishes and love to all of you from your cousins Karen, Daniel, Jenna, and Kayla in California.

I'm sorry I couldn't be there today, but I was thinking of you from the middle of the country. My prayers are with you as you move forward one day at a time.

Phyllis, Amy, Eric and Susan,
I can see Dave laughing at me as I write a message of condolence on a computer to be delivered on a web site. Bernie and I are saddened at his death as we were by his illness. We're grateful for the years of friendship, advice and untiring loyalty and, Phyllis, for the duration of our own lives we hope to follow his example of concern and involvement. We love you and understand the pain that you are enduring.
