TILLINGHAST--David R.

Horace Mann School is deeply saddened by the death of David R. Tillinghast, HM 1947, an esteemed alumnus, former Trustee and a loyal and trusted friend. He was the son of Dorothy and Charles Carpenter Tillinghast, Horace Mann Head of School from 1920 to 1950. During his student days at HM, Mr. Tillinghast was a noted athlete and gifted scholar. Admired by his classmates, colleagues and friends for his strength of character and integrity, the loss of Mr. Tillinghast will be profoundly felt by the many people whose lives he touched. Horace Mann School sends its heartfelt condolences to his grieving family, his loving relatives and his many friends. He will be deeply missed. Dr. Thomas M. David was a giant in our field and wil be sorely missed. I still remember interviewing with him at Hughes Hubbard, at the very strong urging of my Harvard thesis advisor and David's ex-boss, Stanley Surrey. I am still sorry that I missed the chance to learn at his feet!
