David Walley Obituary

WALLEY-David. G. was an influential music critic and iconoclastic cultural historian, best known as the father of the contemporary rock and roll biography. Born 1945 in New Jersey, after graduating Rutgers in 1967 he became a columnist for Jazz and Pop magazine and the East Village Other and wrote reviews in Zygote, Fusion, and Changes. He was also Arts editor of the LA Free Press and ghosted books on Bob Dylan, David Bowie, and Bobby Darin. His interviews with Iggy Pop and the MC5 are considered classics. In recent years, Walley's columns appeared on-line in Cosmik Debris and New Partisan and he guest lectured at Williams College. Walley's books include ``No Commercial Potential: The Saga of Frank Zappa'' (1972), the first biography of the avant garde musician, which remains in print over thirty years later; ``Nothing in Moderation: The Ernie Kovacs Story'' (1975), a seminal biography of television's first surrealist comedian, republished as ``The Ernie Kovacs Phile''; and ``Teenage Nervous Breakdown: Music and Politics in the Post-Elvis Age'' (1998), a critique of American culture, which also remains in print. To be published posthumously is `` The Shackled Historian: The Life and Times of Herbert Feis,'' a biography of the Pulitzer Prize-winning historian. Sample chapters are on Walley's website.

I remember David as being a good writer, insightful in his analyses, dogged in his pursuit of the truth, and dedicated to the illumination of social issues. He also was a good and faithful friend. We shared a moment shortly before his passing. I miss him.

David was a great friend, a tireless mentor, and a man of rare spirit and intellect. Ethics and subversion, humor and pathos, humility and conviction -- he taught me an infinite amount about all of them. It is impossible to imagine life going on without him, but he will always be an inspiration to me.

David: most people do not realize how little rock critics and journalists are paid. You, like so many others, cared far too much for the music and the artists to let money stop you from doing your job. You brought dignity and professionalism to the craft of music criticism. I will miss the slight bobbing of your head to the rhythm and beat of a well-performed live presentation. And say hello to Frank, Ernie, Edie, Janis and all the GTO's. Your books are shelled on library stacks all over the world. For those of you who have not read David’s work, an adventure in ideas and opinion awaits to excite your imagination.

We all remember you with great fondness and love. Admiration for the man that you were and the wonderful memories you brought into my life. Your humor in the face of reality will never be forgotten.

David,

I know you will like this, wherever you are. When I told you recently I was going to LA, you asked me to look up Duke's Luncheonette to see if it's still there. Well, I did, and it is, and I had a chicken salad sandwich on rye and a chocolate egg cream in your honor. I went back to the Alta Cienega Motel and sent you an email detailing my exploits. Then a few days later I ran into Jack Conklin, who told me you had died, and that you had done so just the day before I went to Duke's. I miss you and love you 'bro, and wish I had the chance to tell you that the sandwich was awful but the egg cream sublime. Give my regards to Morrison.
