Dorothy Haffner Obituary

1922 - 2014
Dorothy May Haffner (Smith), of Westbury, NY, passed away in her sleep on Tuesday, January 21, 2014 at the age of 91. Beloved wife, dear mother and loving grandmother, she touched the lives of many, and her warm presence will truly be missed.

Dorothy was born on November 11, 1922 in Queens, NY to a New York City Policeman and German/English immigrant. The youngest of three daughters, Dorothy never failed to make friends wherever she went in life. In 1944, after several years as a sought-after secretary, Dorothy traveled to Alamogordo, New Mexico to marry her serviceman-sweetheart: Thomas Haffner.

After the war ended, Dorothy and Tom started their family together. In 1950, their son James was born followed by their daughter Nancy, five years later. In 1965, Dorothy moved her family out of Queens and into the growing suburbia of Long Island. They spent many happy decades there together. Dorothy was always very active in her local church and surrounding community. There wasn't a neighbor around whose life wasn't enriched by her presence.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, elder sisters, son, James Haffner, and niece Carol Israel (Makey). She is survived by her daughter, Nancy Kronenberg, son-in-law, Michael, grandchildren Diana and Jason and many other loving family and friends. We are all better people for having known her.
