Dear Dannay Family,
Sometimes a great teacher is remembered not only by their students, but by their families. I was received a call this morning from my 96-year old mother, who remembered well the name Douglas Dannay and who read to me his obituary from The New York Times. Please accept my condolences at this loss of your cherished family member.
I was a Roslyn Junior High School student in 1967-1968 whose eyes were opened by this very special teacher. I have told the story to my own college students of studying Robert Frost´s poem "Mending Wall"in 8th grade and learning to appreciate not only the irony of the poem, but the attention to the elements of craft that revealed how poems are made. All of this meant the world to me as youngster who felt compelled to write poems but who was clueless about all that could go into writing a good poem.
Some time ago, the name Douglas Dannay popped up when I was searching for an out-of-print book. I dropped a note in the mail, fairly certain that this was the person who had influenced me in ways that he could not have known. I felt lucky for that chance to express my gratitude on behalf of the youngster that I had been and the author and teacher that I have become. His reply, though I did not expect one, was thoughtful and generous. Lucky me to have been among his legions of students.
With kind regards,
Carol Zoref
