EDWARD FLAX Obituary

FLAX--Edward,

82, died peacefully on March 15 at his Plainview, NY home. His generosity and warm spirit will be missed by all who knew him. Born in Brooklyn, June 18, 1934, he went to Andrew Jackson High School. He graduated from Harvard University in 1955 and Harvard Law School in 1958. In 1956, he married Eileen Feldman of Newton, MA. After serving briefly in the army reserves, they moved to Kew Gardens, NY, where he practiced law and concurrently worked with his father, who owned a mortgage business. He then transitioned into real estate, building single family homes on Long Island. In 1964, he founded Emmy Building Company, and went on to become one of Long Island's most prominent developers, building thousands of homes in the next 50 years. He loved the outdoors, and engaged in many athletic endeavors, including jogging, tennis, swimming, biking, kayaking, boating, scuba diving, and hiking. He was passionate about seeing the world, and with his wife, and often with his family, traveled to many corners of the earth. He loved to learn, read voraciously and did The New York Times crossword puzzle religiously. He loved classical music and was a devoted philanthropist, supporting countless causes. He was devoted to his family, and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Eileen, his son Douglas (and Kippur) of Albuquerque, and daughters Elizabeth (and Andrew) of Syosset, NY and Emily of Provincetown, MA, grandchildren, Paul and Alyssa Goleburn, and brother and sister-in-law, Burt and Leah Flax of Old Westbury, sister Linda Flax of Queens, and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins. Services will be at 10am, Sunday, March 19 at Gutterman's in Woodbury followed by burial at Wellwood Cemetery in Pinelawn. In lieu of flowers, donations to American Kidney Fund, kidneyfund.org, Good Shepherd Hospice, www.good shepherdhospice.chsli.org or Juvenile Diabetes Research Fund, JDRF.org

To the Flax Family -

I was so sorry to hear of Ed's passing - I worked for Doug and Kippur in Syosset helping out while Kippur attended school - I met Ed and Eileen once or twice when they visited and he and Eileen were both very nice -

My prayers go out to Eileen and also Doug and Kippur - I am still in Syosset, but think of both of you very often and miss you - will write to you soon -

Love, Nancy (and the pets)

Eileen - I tried to send you a card but to a very old address. I was so sorry to learn of Ed's death in a telephone call from Bunny. The old Harvard gang, with such great memories, is fading away. I have such fond memories of all the good times with you and Ed, including your taking such good care of me with my ACL injury out in Colorado.
Thinking of you - fondly

To the Flax family with sincere sympathy from your old neighbors - the Monacos - from Fern Drive West. Our sister Vicki lives near San Diego with her family. We remember that she babysat for you and that you gave her a beautiful gold bracelet. She still wears that bracelet and we always remark that it was a beautiful gift from you.
With our condolences - Milena, Joanne, Tom, and Vicki

Barbara and I send our heart felt condolences to Eileen, Douglas (and Kippur) Elizabeth (and Andrew) Emily and grandchildren, Paul and Alyssa.

Ed and I go back 37 years. He taught me the building business and we were still working together when I got married and moved to Florida in 1999. Ed and I renovated Douglas's house, we played tennis and socialized with each other. Recently we talked by phone every weekend. He would tell me how much he loved Eileen and how dedicated she was.

I will miss our weekend conversations, but won't forget how generous, kind, and determined Ed was, even when he was wrong!

Barbara and I send you and your family all our love.

I am very sorry to hear of Ed's passing. We had many conversations in the 1990's during Emmy's busy building years on Long Island. My heartfelt condolences go out to Eileen, the children and grandchildren.
