Ed was a teacher of mine in graduate school at Duke, and he directed my master's thesis on Plato. At one point, I served as his teaching assistant. We became friends, and I fondly remember his warmth and wit, and his appreciation of Italian cuisine. He was a popular teacher, whose undergraduate students described him as "that fast talker from Columbia". His entry into the priesthood came as a surprise to many, but it was consistent with his philosophical background.
