Dear Mrs. Battley:
Just a quick note to express my sincere condolences. I only just read of Professor Battley's passing.
He was the instructor for the introductory zoology course I took as an incoming freshman in the fall of 1973 (our textbook was Integrated Principles of Zoology by Cleveland Hickman, 4th Ed.). After three Stony Brook degrees and up through 2015, whenever I found myself back on campus I always made it a point to stop by his office hoping he was around just to say hi and thank him for leaving an indelible impression on how I view the natural world. My one regret is not having also taken his botany course!
A true academic who loved teaching as much as research; a rarity nowadays. He was the best and will always be fondly remembered.

Dear Susan: Over the years I tried to contact Ted several times, without success. I admired Ted for his scientific work and also for his extremely nice character. We worked in the same field and met several times at various conferences. He also was as an academic guest at my university in Lausanne, Switzerland. In the summer of 2017 my wife and myself undertook a large trip through the US and wished to visit Ted, but we were unable to contact him.
It is only today, with 5 years of delay, that I found, after an intensive search on Google, the present obituary and learned with a lot of regret that he passed away already 5 years ago. I would like to offer you my sincere condolences despite being so much late. I hope you found your way in life again after the enormous loss of your husband 5 years ago, but I am sure that many great memories are still alive of your common life with Ted.
