Elaine Niederhoffer Obituary

NIEDERHOFFER Elaine Eisenberg died at age 81 on April 23, 2006. Adored wife of the late Arthur, beloved mother of Victor Niederhoffer, Diane Niederhoffer Klein, and Roy Niederhoffer. Cherished grandmother of Galt, Katie, Lauren, Rand, Amy, Victoria, Artemis, Kira, Ian, and Gabrielle. Treasured great-grandmother of Magnolia. Dear sister of Phyllis, Helene, and Howard. Elaine influenced a generation of students during her fulfilling elementary school teaching career in Brooklyn, NY and later became a distinguished editor and author in the field of criminal justice and public administration at John Jay College. She continued her work as a mentor and writing coach in Montclair, NJ. Her great love for literature, art, music, and travel, and her extraordinary commitment to family inspires us all. We will always remember fondly the joy and kindness that Elaine brought into our lives as we gathered at Elm Tre Pool on summer evenings. She encouraged Ashley to pursue her Masters at John Jay and we are forever grateful for that support. Our love goes out to the entire family.

Elaine's contribution to John Jay College and its students were steadfast, loving and creative. She aided hundreds of students and was especially generous with her time and resources to the doctoral students who were trying to emulate Arthur's example of scholarship and practice. I was priviledged to share in Elaine's beautiful vision of improving the field of Criminal Justice by aiding students of all ages and backgrounds, but most importantly to her, the doctoral students. We were priviledged to have known Elaine Niederhoffer while she lived in our village of Russell Gardens. She embodied the best qualities we used to treasure; intelligence, generosity, a love of the arts, and a very inquiring mind. She and her dear husband Arthur were most kind and giving to our son Ari who was Roy's age and included him on many wonderful adventures. We will forever be thankful for all their kind attentions. We are very saddened to learn of her passing and send the entire Niederhoffer family our most heartfelt sympathies . The entire Nachmanoff family.
