ELEANOR GRAVES Obituary

GRAVES--Eleanor MacKenzie. Eleanor MacKenzie Graves, 95, died peacefully after a year of diminishing health. Born to Dr. Luther and Rena MacKenzie of NYC and Nova Scotia, she was a lifelong Manhattanite and graduate of Spence School and Barnard College. Her three decade career at Time Inc. led to appointment to Asst. Managing Editor of Life Magazine. She authored the notable cookbook, "Great Dinners from Life". Her first marriage, to William Parish Sr., ended in divorce. She then married journalist and editor Ralph Graves, who preceded her in death. She is survived by her four children: Bill and Alex Parish and Sara Graves Savage and Andrew Graves as well as numerous grandchildren. She maintained a beloved summer home in Chilmark, MA and in later years she spent winters in Sarasota, FL. Her beauty, charm and taste did not disguise a steel trap mind, iron will, razor tongue and unbending sense of right and wrong. Phrases like unique and force of nature do no justice. Eleanor did not suffer fools, but also leaves an unfillable gap in the lives of those she loved. She will be missed.

Every Christmas we would select one of the dinners from Great Dinners From Life. My mother, my 3 sisters, and I would enjoy making a wonderful Christmas dinner together. I still use the cookbook, a gem. What a great legacy!

It was my pleasure to work with her for 28 years. I absolutely loved the white garden we created at her home in Chilmark. I think of her everyday I drive by the property. Very beautiful memories of her and Ralph.
