ELIZABETH CURRY Obituary

CURRY--Elizabeth Rivers.

The trustees, faculty, staff and students of The Rockefeller University deeply mourn the loss of our cherished trustee Elizabeth Rivers Curry. Beth had a deep curiosity about science and a passion for learning about the work of our investigators. Our scientists treasured their friendships with Beth and relished her delight in discovery. A friend of the University since the 1990s, Beth Curry joined The Rockefeller University Council in 2008 and was elected to the Board of Trustees in 2013, serving on a number of Board committees, including Finance & Operations, Hospital, and Audit. Beth's thoughtful and deeply engaged participation in the work of these committees and her dedication to advancing scientific research greatly strengthened the University. With her husband, Rockefeller University Council member Ravenel Boykin Curry III, Beth provided generous support that touched many facets of life at the University. A cofounder with Ravenel of Eagle Capital Management, Beth was an astute investor and a talented fund manager who contributed enormously to the firm's success. Like her husband and children, Beth shared the fruits of this success through a commitment to philanthropy and pro bono work. One of the kindest, warmest, most gracious people in the University's orbit, Beth added much to the culture and community at Rockefeller. She will be profoundly missed by all of us whose lives she touched. We send our heartfelt condolences to Beth's beloved husband, Ravenel; her three children, Boykin, Caroline, and Marshall, and their spouses; her adored grandchildren; and her entire family. Beth was an amazing, intelligent, inspiring woman that I had the pleasure of having several interesting conversations with at Playa Grande. Those nuggets of wisdom will remain with me always, as I am sure her love and influence will always guide you all,her family.I hope you take comfort in your wonderful memories and the gift of having her in your lives. She was very special. So sorry for your loss.

May God comfort Beth's family! I live in Chesterfield, South Carolina and remember Beth from her childhood. She was always such a beautiful person. Both a strong leader and gentle person at the same time. Everyone in Chesterfield loved Beth.

Dear Ravenel, Boykin, Caroline and Marshall,
Words are inadequate to express my and the Hensel family's profound sorrow in learning of Beth's passing. Beth touched my life for most of my life - as neighbors several houses away in Summit (Woodcroft and Hillcrest), as co-founder of the new Summit Childcare Center with my mother years ago, and as a thoughtful and wonderful client and then a colleague in the investment business. I remember her first and foremost as a devoted and caring mother and wife, and her deep commitment to help those less fortunate through all the volunteer work she did in Summit, and then later her understated brilliance as an investor. We shared many chats at investor conferences and meetings over the years - she was unquestionably a savvy investor and always had a gem of an insight in the investment topic/stock du jour - that was apparently lost on most in the room. All the while her children remained front of mind - as I can not think of a time when at least one of them did not come up in conversation. She was the personification of southern gentility. Her kind actions spoke far louder than her words. Curry family, we are just so very sorry for your loss.
With deepest sympathy, Katherine Hensel and the rest of the Hensel family

I will never forget the summer I spent living at my parents apartment in the same building as Beth. One day the elevator opened to her apartment on the way up and she opened her arms wide and said, "welcome! glad you're here, let me know if you ever need to borrow a cup of sugar!" We walked to midtown together a few times and I will never forget her warmth, wit and generosity.

Have such fond memories of Beth and her family as I graduated from Chesterfield High with her brother Jay. Just in the last few years our class was blessed by Jay and Carhry hosting our reunion at the Farm House in Chesterfield. May you be comforted knowing she had a full life and contributed so much to her fellow man. A true Sourhern Lady. Nancy Jo and Jim Wood Bennettsville, sc

I don't know that Beth made up any stories; she simply mined any interesting event or relationship for it's most delightful angles. One could listen to Beth for hours; but of course, she was always taking time to listen to us! Beth transformed a mediocre 9th grade English class into one of my most delightful inspirations to teach English myself one day (I did not measure up to her example!). Then she adopted my family, far from home in the NYC suburbs so that every member of her and Ravenel's family was primary family to my children and me. Distracted by church jobs and a messy divorce, we would have suffered rocky family holidays but for Beth and Ravenel and their wonderful kids. When the right partner came along, Susan and her kids have been warmly welcomed, too. Of course, we miss her; but we emulate her grace, as well!

Dear Family, Beth and I were in the same class at Queens; I feel we have lost our brightest light. Beth was such a natural leader on campus. Her warmth, drawl and genuine interest in others could almost lull one to miss her keen mind and insight. She was at my house for the 50 th class graduation celebration and even sent flowers for the table. Beth was ever thoughtful, quietly brave, and humble to the core. All of the class of ' 63 will miss her deeply. Bonnie Currie Gilbert

Dear Curry Family,
Though it has been many years, as a new hire in Trust Investments, at Summit Trust, Beth was terrific to me. She was a wonderful human being in every way. My deep sympathy for your loss. God bless all, and God rest Beth.

Dear Ravenel, Marshall, Caroline and Boykin: I wish I could be there in person to share what must be a tremendous sense of loss. I will always treasure our days in Summit and the camaraderie borne of mutual interest in theater, music and dance. Thank you all for letting Hannah and me share in Beth's full and wonderful life.

And since I can't be there, permit me to share "The Dream Keeper," one of my most favorite of Langston Hughes' poems:

Bring me all of your dreams,
You dreamer,
Bring me all your
Heart melodies
That I may wrap them
In a blue cloud-cloth
Away from the too-rough fingers
Of the world.

Love,
