ELLIS MANNING Obituary
MANNING--Ellis W., Jr. Ellis W. Manning Jr., died peacefully at his home in San Rafael, California on August 12, 2022. He had recently celebrated his 97th birthday among family and friends. He was born August 4, 1925, in Washington, D.C. to Ellis W. Manning, Sr. and Lucy Rains Manning. He attended St. Johns College in Annapolis, Maryland, interrupting his education in 1943 to enlist in the U.S. Army, serving in France. After returning from the war he graduated from St. Johns and attended Yale Law School where he attained an LLB in 1952. He practiced law in Washington, D.C., specializing in tax matters as a partner at Wenchel, Schulman & Manning until 1974, when he became Chief Counsel for the Prenalta Corporation in Tarrytown, New York. In 2002, he and his wife, Connie retired to St. Simons, Georgia and later moved to San Rafael, California. Mr. Manning married Constance Howland in 1953. They had four children, three of whom survive him: Ellis Manning, III of West Chester, Pennsylvania; Peter Manning of Middletown, Rhode Island and Elizabeth Howland Manning of Harpswell, Maine. He is also survived by five grandsons and three great-grandsons. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 63 years and their youngest daughter, Katie. Mr. Manning was an avid reader which was fortunate given his driving intellectual curiosity. He enjoyed tennis and golf, playing golf into his 90s. A lifelong fan of his home-town baseball and football teams, he was elated when the Washington football team won their first Super Bowl. The autumn Sunday ritual for many years revolved around the Washington games no matter where he and Connie lived. He was a student of wines which was also fortunate as he took great pleasure in pairing them with Connie's excellent cooking. He and Connie toured Italy and France and especially loved meandering barge trips along the canals and rivers of France. He was a story-teller who recounted tales of his childhood dog, Treve, driving his parents across Europe in the early 1950s or how he met - and almost lost - Connie during an Atlantic Ocean crossing aboard the French Line's Liberte. At heart he was a Renaissance Man who enjoyed spirited discussions on any number of topics. He was a generous man who was devoted to his wife and his family. Above all, he strove to give his best in everything he did. Ellis W. Manning, Jr will be buried beside Connie at Woodside Cemetery in Brinklow, Maryland. The family wishes to thank his caregivers, Carla, Henry and Gerrard for the compassionate, devoted and patient care they provided "Mr. M." over many years.
