ERIC FAST Obituary

FAST--Eric Carson. Eric Carson Fast, 74, a loving husband and proud father of three daughters, passed away peacefully on July 15, 2023, surrounded by his family in Greenwich, CT. Born in Boston on July 10, 1949 to Carol and Robert Fast, Eric grew up in Wyoming, OH, a suburb of Cincinnati, where his parents instilled in him the importance of hard work, a commitment to doing what is right, and a sense of humility. Eric graduated from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and NYU Stern School of Business. It was at Chapel Hill, as a proud DKE fraternity brother, that Eric formed unshakeable bonds and created memories that he would hold dear throughout his life. In the summer of 1978, Eric met the love of his life, Patricia Nelson, in Southampton, NY. Together, they built a life and raised their three daughters, Allison, Christina ("T"), and Lilly in Rye, NY and later in nearby Greenwich, CT. Eric began his career in 1971 at Bank of New York before spending four years at U.S. Industries as Assistant Treasurer, followed by five years at MacMillan Publishing as Treasurer. In 1984, at the age of 35, he pivoted his career into investment banking, joining Salomon Brothers (later Salomon Smith Barney). It was here that Eric spent the next 14 years, assuming multiple leadership roles and ultimately serving as Co-Head of Global Investment Banking and a member of the firm's Management Committee. In 1998, Eric retired from investment banking and chartered a new career path at Crane Co., a publicly listed diversified manufacturing company, serving initially as President and Chief Operating Officer and subsequently as President and Chief Executive Officer. During his 12-plus year tenure as CEO, Eric led transformational change, elevating the business into a global, strategically linked, operating company. As a colleague and dear friend once said, "Eric was everyone's North Star." His style of leadership was one of empathy, trust, and integrity, uniquely anchored by his strong moral compass, unparalleled work ethic, and when appropriate, his dry sense of humor. His commitment to building a culture of honesty, fairness, collaboration and excellence drew the respect and admiration of all who had the privilege of working with him. Eric loved to quote Mark Twain and say - "It's never wrong to do the right thing." In addition to serving on the Board of Directors of Crane Co., Eric served on multiple boards throughout his career including ADP, Regions Financial, Lord Abbett, National Integrity Life Insurance and Convergys. He was also a member of the Business Roundtable and Business Council Away from work, Eric was a man of simple pleasures - a cheeseburger with a light beer and James Taylor tunes and he was happy. Above all else, he loved his coffee at sunrise, walks with "his girls", fly fishing and golf with his friends, and traveling the world with family. His dry wit and deadpan delivery were always a crowd favorite, and he had an unmatched capacity to connect with people of all walks of life with his self-depreca- tion and genuine curiosity. One of Eric's greatest passions, beyond spending time with his family and friends, was the game of squash. In addition to sharing his passion with and teaching the game to his daughters, he served on the board of U.S. SQUASH and chaired the College Squash Association (CSA), all with the mission of building awareness and broadening access to the game for junior and intercollegiate players. In 2009, in recognition for his substantial contributions to the sport, he was honored with the U.S. SQUASH President's Cup, the Association's prestigious citizenship award. Eric is survived by his loving family: Patricia Nelson Fast, his wife of 43 years, their three daughters and sons-in-law, Allison and Ford Harrington, Christina and Kirk Adamson and Lilly and Peter Sullivan, four grandchildren, and his sister Annie Olson. In lieu of flowers, Eric's family asks that gifts in his memory be given to two organizations that were meaningful to him: * NewYork-Presbyterian/ Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital for pediatric cardiology in honor of Eric's granddaughter, Lane Harrington, who received lifesaving care from the amazing team of doctors. https://nyp.org/giving Please designate "MSCH Peds Cardiology." * Squash and Education Alliance (SEA) for the year-round, long-term support they offer to young people who deserve and desire more https://squashandeducation.org/donate. Please designate "Scholarship Fund." A Celebration of Life honoring Eric will be held in September.

I first met Eric when he invited me (a nobody I might add) to join him on the company jet to Toronto. I was flabbergasted. But that is who Eric was. He always knew my name and was always interested in the projects I was working on. Nothing was ever superficial with Eric; he was a down to earth guy who talked to you as a peer and his CEO title never got in the way. He is missed to this day.

Eric Fast was a great leader, to ordinary people, and very kind to my son who is his son in law. I´m sorry that Eric was unable to pass more of his business acumen on to my son, and the promised golf games were never played. I am also sad that his granddaughter Lane was not able to get to know her grandfather before he passed.
However, I am glad that I was able to meet him if but for a short time. His kind and quiet demeanor left a lasting impression on me. God bless him and his entire family into this time of grieving.

As a former squash professional at the R&TC, it always made my day when Eric appeared in the pro-shop: warm, friendly, funny, generous, curious. Eric had a so-engaging ability to make me feel that our conversation was the most important one of his day.

May the putter in the pond join Eric in heaven and may I be a part of the foursome. I will miss my dear friend of so many years but will cherish all the fun and meaningful times we were so fortunate to share together.

My sincerest sympathies to the Fast family. Eric was a very important figure to me and my team at a small Crane Co. division. The kindest yet firm leader I was lucky enough to learn from. I visited he and Elise K. as they retired from Crane and both could not have been kinder. He said to my co-worker and me that day; "I love you guys". I will remember him fondly with the upmost respect. RIP sir.

My sincerest condolences to the Family of Mr Eric Fast. I did not have the honor to really know Eric, but there are great people who can really leave an impression on you that stays forever. I have been with Crane Aerospace & Electronics for 26 years. When I was still quite new, I gave a presentation to the Crane management when coming through my area. I was nervous beyond imagination, and I am certain it was all over my face. I held it together and made it through the presentation. After it was over, Eric came up to me and put his hand on my shoulder, smiled and said "Don't worry, you did a great job!" and shook my hand. From that moment, all my nervousness just went away and I thanked him for that. Rest in Peace Mr Eric Fast.

I met Eric Fast in a Corp Kaizen event. He walked into the event asking, "Now who is this person wanting a picture with me?" He took a group photo with us and later invited us into his office. It was such a small thing to do but made a big impact on the team, something I am certain we will all never forget. Thanks for leading us for so many years! God bless you and your family.

I was a fraternity brother,room-mate ,golf partner and friend of Eric´s during the 56yrs we knew each other.I also had the great fortune of knowing Patti and their three girls.
Eric was a leader in his business activities, and he also managed to be a very loved husband and great example for his 3 daughters.
All that knew Eric benefited by his friendship.
When his family ,friends and business associates think about Eric it will leave a smile on everyone´s face.
Be safe my friend!

I had the fortunate experience to work with Eric at Crane Co for many years and am proud to also have been a brother of his within DKE. His leadership transformed Crane and made it a role model for problems solving, leadership and transparency. It was a privilege to call him my CEO and he will be sorely missed.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. I worked at Crane Aerospace the entire time that Eric was President, COO and then CEO of Crane Co. We had occasion to spend quite a bit of time together at the annual major airshows. His face always lit up when he talked to me of his family and he was so proud of his daughters. I went through some of my old photos because I remembered I had a couple of Eric from around 2011 (I think it was Paris), and wanted to share it. The Governor of Washington State at the time, Christine Gregoire, visited our stand for a short briefing and I took a photo of them on the stand together as she was leaving. I am so sorry for your loss.

Of my "top 10" professional colleagues/friends at Salomon Brothers, Eric was one of them. I am surprised by his death at such a young age, remember his abilities as both a leader at work and a great husband/father/friend. I wish Patty and his children all the best. I was so fortunate to be a pledge brother of Eric's at UNC's DKE House. That led to a life-long friendship and brotherhood. He was a true gentleman, had a keen business sense, was a devoted husband and father and a friend to many. My friend, you will be greatly missed.

I am saddened by Eric´s passing. I overlapped with Eric for years at Salomon. I was in research, he was in charge of the bankers I worked with. His integrity and leadership was a North Star for his team and made my job - quality control - so much easier. As a woman in a frat-like environment, Eric never saw me as anything less-than and in fact, made it his business to ensure his team followed his example. We did not always agree, but he always heard me out. We all are better for having known and worked with him.
