Gene and I were childhood friends. I grew up on 48th street and Gene on 49th street. We played many pick up baseball and football games and were on the same little league team. We attended Gibson Elementary School helped in the school office before school began together. His family moved after elementary school and he graduated from Banks and I from Woodlawn. We were together again for the Exchange Club presentation of their award for graduating at the top of our respective high school class. After we both left Birmingham, I only saw him once at a Gibson reunion.

I served with Gene at West Point and in the Central Highlands and leadership ability was evident to all. The 70th Engineers was a strac unit that helped us 2-1 Cav troopers keep the roads and bridges secure in Vietnam. Gene embodied Duty-Honor-Country and fully earned a final peace in the Long Gray Line.

Gene and I ran the Goldman Sachs and Salomon Brothers offices, respectively, in Tokyo in the early 1980s. We were fierce competitors and great friends. He embraced professional and personal standards which we all aspired to. He was a true leader! Needless to say, he will be missed by all who knew him.
