FATMA ALEEM Obituary

ALEEM--Dr. Fatma. Dr. Fatma Aleem, M.D., Ph.D., a pioneering reproductive endocrinologist and obstetrician-gynecologist, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2025, at the age of 91. Born in Alexandria, Egypt in 1933, Dr. Aleem made significant contributions to women's health in both the United States and her native Egypt. A trailblazer in every sense, she was one of a handful of women to graduate from medical school in Egypt in 1959. Her groundbreaking work in the fields of fertility and menopause earned her international recognition at a time when these areas were still largely under-researched. Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Aleem played an instrumental role in advancing medical care for women and children. Her legacy, however, extends far beyond her professional accomplishments. Dr. Aleem dedicated much of her life to charitable endeavors, leaving a profound impact on communities both near and far. While she was committed to her patients and local community in New York, she remained deeply connected to her Egyptian roots. She founded pediatric cancer care units in Egypt and worked tirelessly to promote unity among the Egyptian and Arab communities in the tri-state area. Her unwavering advocacy for her Arab heritage and Muslim faith made her a beloved figure and mentor to many. Above all, Dr. Aleem was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and she took great pride in her family. Her greatest joy came from nurturing and supporting her loved ones. She is survived by her three daughters, Hala, Sahar, and Dalal, and her three granddaughters, Lara, Dalia, and Gigi. She will be laid to rest next to her adoring husband of 42 years, Dr. Salah Elhabashi. Dr. Aleem's remarkable contributions to the medical field, her charitable work, and the love she shared with her family will remain a lasting testament to her life's work and legacy. She will be deeply missed.

My condolences to Hala, Sahar, Dalal and all the family.

I have the fondest memories of Dr Aleem. She received me at her home, as I regularly tagged along with Sahar during weekend visits over many years. Always the loveliest hostess. Elegant and immaculately turned out. Warm words of welcome. Ready with a refreshment or a snack before I could even sit down. We would discuss the world and in particular the state of Egypt which she always deeply cared about.

I will cherish these precious moments with her - even those in later years when she was less well. Still she always had a twinkle in her eye, a ready smile and fun comment to share.

Rest in peace, Dr Aleem. May you always be blessed and thank you for all the blessings you conferred on those around you .
