FELIX SHAPIRO

SHAPIRO--Dr. Felix, M.D., 88, of Sarasota, FL, formerly of Pleasantville, NY, passed away on May 27, 2021. The only child of the late Louis and Rachael (Berns) Shapiro, he was born August 30, 1932, and grew up in Brookline, MA. He graduated from Brandeis University in 1953 and was drafted into the Army, where he served during the Korean War. He graduated Boston University's School of Medicine in 1963 and did internships at Mount Zion University Medical Center and Langley Porter in California before returning east to complete Psychiatric Residency at Metropolitan Hospital in New York City. He stayed on at Metropolitan Hospital's PHP, and met the love of his life, Ellen Jane Quinn, also on staff at the hospital, and they married on March 23, 1971. They relocated to Pleasantville, NY, where he worked as Associate Director of Psychiatry at Northern Westchester Hospital, in Mount Kisco, NY, and held a private practice, for 30 years. They had two children and remained in Pleasantville until they moved to Sarasota, FL, in 2010. In Sarasota, he volunteered at the Sarasota Music Archive at the Selby Public Library, where he loved to introduce people to music. He also searched for a decent bagel or Chinese Restaurant but, sadly, never found either. His greatest joys were spending time with his family, watching the Yankees and the Knicks with his son, and playing classical music on his beloved Steinway. He had a passion for photography and was a member of the Westchester Photographic Society. Dr. Shapiro is survived by his wife of 50 years, Jane, his children, Matthew, and Jennifer, and his granddaughters, Caitlin, and Cecilia. A funeral service will be held at the Hawthorne Funeral Home, 21 West Stevens Ave., Hawthorne, NY on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at 10am.
