Fern Cohen Obituary

COHEN--Fern W., died at age 74 on May 17, 2009, in the company of her family at home. Fern loved and in turn was deeply loved by her husband Dan, daughter Elizabeth Giamatti, sons Seth and Josh Cohen, son-in-law Paul Giamatti, daughters-in-law Elizabeth Uchitelle and Ruth Metzger, and her grandchildren Jake, Sam, Lucas and Olivia. Daughter of the late Judge Edward Weinfeld and Lillian Weinfeld, sister of the late Ann Schulman, Fern was a lifelong resident of New York City, a psychoanalyst and psychotherapist, author of the memoir, "From Both Sides of the Couch", a passionate tennis player, and a wry, honest and unafraid observer of the world around her. Services will be held on Wednesday, May 20th at 11:45am at Riverside Chapel, 180 West 76th Street. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Doctors Without Borders.

What a loss! Fern was really fun to be with; a person of great abilities, knowledgeable, and above all, warm and friendly. Fern and Dan have friends from every continent, every social circle, every age. My deepest condolences to Dan and the family.

Dear Cohen Family,
I'll never forget any of the days I spent with your family. I always have kept track, via Amish, or Philip, or however else news reached me, via Hev-gad for instance. You are a very special family, and Fern was a unique, wonderful, larger than life woman. I cannot even imagine what her loss means. We are all with you in some way or another,

Dear Danny,
I can hardly find the words to express my overwhelming sadness. Fern was an exceptional human being... an inspiration to me. Her friendship, her guidance, her wide smile will never be forgotten. Knowing her has touched my life in so many ways and her book will remain at my bedside, as it has for the past few years, a reminder of the trials and tribulations of life. A reminder that when we challenge ourselves, we grow as human beings.
I send my sympathy and love to you, your kids and grandkids.
Affectionately,

I just received the news of the recent passing of Dr. C. (as I called her) and was so deeply saddened and shocked as we were in touch just about a month ago.

My deepest sympathies to your entire family.

I was a patient many years ago but we remained in touch long after I was no longer a patient.

Dr. C was an extraordinary woman as you already know. She quite frankly changed my life. I feel blessed to have known her.

Her family was so important to her and she was so very proud of her children & grandchildren.

My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Please know that she mad a difference in the lives of many---including me--and will be remembered very fondly and missed tremendously.

Fern was a valued contributor to our book, Stories of Illness and Healing: Women Write Their Bodies. Her own narrative, so well crafted and carefully thought out, is of lasting value to us all. It was both challenging and gratifying to work with her.

I was deeply saddened to read about the recent death of Fern. Although it has been almost 2 decades since I last saw her, Dr. Cohen had an enormous and positive impact on my life. . I wanted to express my deepest condolences to her entire family. There is a saying in my family that when someone dies if they are remembered fondly and with love they are in heaven and if not.... This speaks volumes for Dr. Cohen.

With our deepest sympathy and regrets that we never had a chance to really get to know Fern. After Aunt Lillian and Uncle
Eddie passed we lost touch. Our Love to Anne and others we may not know yet.
