FLORENCE PELOQUIN Obituary

PELOQUIN--Florence, a trailblazer for women in advertising. Died on August 21 at the age of 94. Florence was determined to work in the newspaper or magazine publishing world even as a teenager. She was editor in chief of the Abraham Lincoln High School newspaper, The Lincoln Log, when it won the Columbia Journalism Medalist Award in l945. She was an English major at Brooklyn College. Her apprentice years were spent at Women's Wear Daily and Parent's magazine. In 1956, she joined the editorial staff of Family Circle, then switched to the advertising department because "that's where the money was". She was the first woman on the advertising staff at Family Circle and the first woman Vice President/advertising in the field. In 1976, the competition, Woman's Day, convinced Florence to move to this recently acquired magazine by CBS Publications. After ten successful years there, she left to form her own successful advertising firm, Florence Peloquin Associates. She was the first chairwoman of the Ethics Committee of the Direct Marketing Association. In 1981, she was inducted into YWCA's Academy of Women Achievers. She was on the Board of Directors of Advertising Women of New York and a vice president of the Direct Marketing Club of New York. She was a winner of that club's Silver Apple Award in 1989. She lectured on direct response advertising at New York University and national conferences. After her retirement in l998, Florence was a volunteer with Learning Leaders, a reading program affiliated with the public schools. For ten years she was an audio proofreader for the audio- books-on-tape at the Andrew Heiskell branch of the New York Public Library. Florence was very active at East End Temple where she served on the Board of Trustees and was the editor for many years of their monthly newsletter, the Templet. Her first marriage to Jerry Simon ended in divorce. Her second marriage to L. Regis Peloquin ended with his death in 1980. She is survived by her daughters Julie Bender and Michele Simon and grandson, Robert Keller. No services planned.

I often enjoyed sharing lunch with Florence and Judith Lorber after Rosh Hashona services. As the New Year approaches, I find myself remembering the good conversation, and feeling thankful for the gift of friendship that I received at these luncheon celebrations.

It took a special kind of strength and tenacity to succeed in the "boys club" of consumer publishing sales. She was BIG: A big personality and a pleasure to know. She had good taste too. I. liked her a ton and will miss our lunches.
