FRANCIS McARDLE Obituary

McARDLE--Francis X. Age 82, died on May 15, 2024, in Danvers, MA after a short illness. A train buff and infrastructure maven, he held a BA from the University of Toronto and did graduate work at Syracuse's Maxwell School of Public Policy before serving in multiple posts in New York City government, culminating in three years at the helm of the Department of Environmental Protection under Mayor Koch. For most of the following three decades he served as the managing director of the General Contractor's Association of New York, where he was a tireless champion for more investment in the city's critical infrastructure. He was also a longstanding member of the Moles, and served on the National Surface Transportation Policy and Revenue Study Commission. When he was not talking trains, roads, and tunnels, he was an avid fan of old books, traditional Irish music and dance, and cat puns. He is survived by his sisters Patricia and Regina McArdle, daughters Megan (Peter Suderman) and Nora McArdle and his niece, nephew and four great-nieces and nephews, and pre-deceased by his sister, Catherine McArdle Kelleher. All who know him will miss his infinite store of trivia, his deep enthusiasm, and his puckish sense of humor. A Graveside Service will be held in Greenlawn Cemetery, 195 Nahant Rd., Nahant, MA on Friday, June 21, 2024 at 12:30pm. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. I learned many lessons over the years of dancing with Frank. I didn´t anticipate the last lesson would be not to put off connecting with someone who is important and has meaning in your life. I lost touch with Frank many years ago and now I can only reflect on the impact he had on my life and others around him and hope these reflections reach him as he continues on his journey. Goodness emanated from deep in his soul. As humble as he was, just a poor Irish boy making his way in this world he would say, he always wanted to raise anyone in need or suffering above their troubles. He allowed his height and his presence to offer protection to others around him. His remarkable brain retained everything and organized that information in a way that useful, enhancing the infrastructure of this city as he organized the infrastructure of his heart and soul. Frank, I will miss you and I am so sorry we lost touch. May your journey be miraculous and allow for the freedom you always deserved.

Frank was one of the best students at the Richard Olney School in West Roxbury. We were in the same class from the first through sixth grades. I have many memories from those years. But we grew up and moved away and I met him again only once and that more than forty years later. He came to give a talk at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia where I had become a professor. I shall always remember him

So very sorry to hear about Frank. Spent many a day with him and all the New Yorkers who travelled annually to Tubbercurry , Malahide , Cape May . A humble and kind man. May his gentle soul rest in peace. He will be missed.
