FRANK BUMPUS Obituary

BUMPUS--Dr. Frank Thatcher, died peacefully at home on December 18, 2020 surrounded by loving friends, Vincent M. Tamagna, Joseph Cook and Glonise Dutton due to complications with Alzheimer's and Dementia. He is the beloved Uncle of six nieces, Suzie Reed (Michael), Christina Wilson (Reed), Priscilla Tanase (Ted), Kathy Urquhart, Jane Nielsen, and Marie Mentor. Frank was a compassionate loving partner to Lucio Petrocelli who predeceased him in 2004. Frank was born in Rochester, Minnesota to Dr. Hermon Carey Bumpus Jr. (The Mayo Clinic) and Helen (Norton) McBurnie (Laird Norton Company, Seattle). Frank was a loving brother and was predeceased by siblings Nancy Helen Bumpus-Urquhart and William Norton Bumpus. A resident of Cold Spring, New York, Dr. Bumpus was the principal donor to a National Endowment for the Humanities Challenge grant that underpins the endowment of the Hudson River Valley Institute (HRVI) and established the Dr. Frank T. Bumpus Chair in Hudson River Valley History, making him one of Marist College's most generous and transformational benefactors. As a bombardier and navigator in the United States Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1945, Lieutenant Bumpus flew forty-three combat missions from bases in England in Douglas A-20 Havoc bombers against targets in France and Germany and awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. Trained as a radiologist at Tufts College Medical School after the war, he served at Memorial Hospital, now Sloan Kettering Memorial, in New York City for over a decade. Philanthropic contributions included support to the Florida Memorial Hospital, Key West and Customs House in partnership with the Trust for Public Land and the Key West Art & Historical Society. Frank was also a contributor to both Tufts University and Marist College, where the Dr. Frank T. Bumpus Chair in Hudson River Valley Studies at the Hudson River Valley Institute with his name forever into the future. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to support his legacy and love of history to Marist College (HRVI).
