FRED SCHEINER Obituary

SCHEINER--Fred, of Roslyn, NY passed away peacefully on the morning of June 5, 2022 at the age of 95. Local restaurateur, pilot, family man and left-wing political activist - he lived a full life. The fight for socio-economic and racial justice and equality for all was very important to him. In March 1968, he flew Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Andrew Young to a conference in upstate New York in his four-passenger plane. In the early 1970s, he was particularly proud of having been named to President Nixon's Enemy list. He considered it a badge of honor. In 1951, after a short stint as a carpenter, he joined his parents, Max and Frances, in the restaurant business. In 1957, they opened The Jolly Fisherman & Steak House in Roslyn. 1,168,991 lobsters later, The Jolly Fisherman is going strong, still in the family, and growing from the strong foundation he established. Although his mind was still there until the end, he had become physically depleted in the last several years. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Rosalind (Roz), whom he met at Camp Wo-Chi-Ca in 1949; his three children, Terry, Steven, and Carol and their spouses; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He will be missed by many friends and relatives.
