FREDERICK GUEST Obituary

GUEST--Frederick Edward II. Frederick Edward Guest II, a true gentleman, died peacefully on July 8, 2021 in New York City at the age of 83 with his wife of 33 years, Carole, by his side. Fred was born on February 13, 1938, in New York City to Winston F. C. Guest and Helena W. McCann. Fred's father, Winston, founded Guest Airlines Mexico and was an international polo player and friend of Ernest Hemingway. His mother, Helena, was a granddaughter of F. W. Woolworth, founder of the Woolworth stores. His paternal grandfather, Captain the Right Honourable Frederick E. Guest, was a member of Parliament and first cousin to Sir Winston Churchill. His grandmother, Amy Guest, was a daughter of Henry Phipps, the philanthropist and partner of industrialist Andrew Carnegie. Amy was a prominent women's suffragist and aviation enthusiast. After Charles Lindbergh made the first solo flight across the Atlantic, she wanted to be the first woman to make headlines for the same. When her family objected, Amy offered the opportunity to Amelia Earhart, underwriting her successful transatlantic flight. Fred graduated from St. Paul's School in Concord, NH and studied economics at the Wharton School of Finance of the University of Pennsylvania. From 1960 until 1963, Fred served as the Director of Research at Troster Singer & Company. For the next decade, Fred worked in finance at Smith Barney; New York State Urban Development Corp.; and Lehman Brothers. From 1974 through 1982, Fred was Chairman of Bessemer Securities Corporation, a family office established by Henry Phipps in 1907. During this time, he served as Vice Chairman of various subsidiaries within Bessemer Securities Corporation, and Chairman of Phipps Land Company. Fred married Carole Baldoff Kerr, a Vice President of Kidder, Peabody & Co. in 1988 at Old Westbury Gardens, Old Westbury, NY. Fred and Carole became an inseparable couple whose loving marriage was an inspiration to those who knew them. Fred was proud of his work restoring the 1925 grandeur of the historic Vinoy Hotel in St. Petersburg, FL. The hotel, for a time, was the official home of the Women's Tennis Association. He was instrumental in revitalizing the city as President of Vinoy Development Corporation from 1984 to 1996. In 1997, Fred founded Guest Capital LLC, a private investment fund. For over 30 years, he was a trustee of Phipps Houses, New York City's oldest and largest not-for-profit developer of affordable housing. Fred is survived by his adoring wife, Carole, his four loving children from his first wife, Stephanie W. Guest: Victoria W. Guest (Jeffrey Davies), Vanessa W. Hope (Ted Hope), Frederick E. Guest III, and Andrew C. Guest (Jenna Friedenberg), and his grandchildren: Lochlan M. Davies Guest, Emmett W. Guest, Rosemary L. Guest, and Michael H. Hope. He is also survived by his siblings: Winston, Cornelia, and Alexander Guest. As a member of the Meadow Club in Southampton, Fred was very proud of having won the member guest tennis tournament seven times. Prior to taking up tennis, Fred was a polo player with a three-goal handicap. Fred was kind, gentle, generous, and a great storyteller who loved his family above all. He had an infectious laugh, warm, sweet demeanor and was loved by all who knew him. Fred will be profoundly missed. Donations in Fred's memory may be made to the Southampton Fresh Air Home, 36 Barkers Island Rd, Southampton, NY 11968 www.sfah.org

Helen called me with the sad news. I knew Freddy from polo on Long Island. He was a good friend back then and a great guy. Condolences to the family from mine.
