George Brent Obituary

BRENT--George of Manhattan and Lakeville, CT, died peacefully on Wednesday, January 2, after a long and courageous battle with heart disease, surrounded by loving family and friends under the care of the wonderful team at Mount Sinai Heart. He was born in Budapest, Hungary on January 7, 1937 as George Gottlieb. At the age of six he survived the Holocaust, fleeing Budapest with his mother and living in hiding for two years. He returned to Budapest after the war, but by age 19 he was no longer willing to tolerate living within the oppressive Communist regime. He escaped the city by foot in late November 1956, one day after planned (he overslept). On the way out of Hungary, he evaded gunfire, slept in a barn and waded through a small freezing river. After reaching Austria, he was chosen to serve as the leader and spokesperson for a group of Hungarian students being housed by an Austrian Count. Although he had the opportunity for relatively easy passage to a variety of countries, he was determined to get to the United States and specifically to New York City. He arrived in New York Harbor in February 1957 on a U.S. Navy transport ship with no money and no knowledge of English, but an uncompromising determination to build a home and embrace life in a place that protects and celebrates individual freedom. He went to Columbia on a scholarship, where he studied engineering and economics. He began a career in advertising and media working for ad agencies and then directly for a client. Ultimately he moved into media sales, working at WPIX, Fox 5 and NBC's PAX Television, building a sales career that spanned more then 35 years, thousands of avails and many, many lunches. In 1974, he married Chickie Bucco, whom he adored (a fact that aggravated him to no end). He was the proud father of Andrew and loving father-in-law to Erin. He was a passionate and talented chef and wine connoisseur. He also loved renovating his country house, gardening, Giants, Rangers and Yankees games, bragging about his son, and, maybe most of all, entertaining and celebrating life with family and friends. In addition to Chickie, Andrew and Erin, George is survived by his Aunt Giselle, cousins of Hungary, and the entire Bucco family. Service Monday January 7, 11:30am Campbell Funeral Chapel, 1076 Madison Ave. at 81st St. Memorial Visitation Sunday January 6, 59pm Campbell Funeral Chapel. Family sitting Shiva at his home Monday January 7, 59pm and Tuesday January 8, 12-9pm. The family is asking that any donations be made to Mount Sinai Heart in memory of George Brent with the deepest respect for Dr. Raymond Matta. Donations should be send to Mount Sinai Heart, Box 1049, 1 Gustave Levy Place, NY, NY 10029.

Dear Chickie:
I was among the large, warm crowd at the the service for George yesterday. You and Andrew were extraordinary; I know that George was so proud of you both.
My father came to this country with no money and no ability to speak or understand English. In George I saw many of my father's qualities, and loved being around a European gentleman.
I was so fond of George for his humor and kindness. I am one of the lucky ones who joined him on those lunches which were filled with good wine, good food and lots of laughter.
I honor him for living life to the fullest. You can be so proud of your life together and certainly of your fabulous son, Andrew.
I will keep you, George and Andrew in my thoughts and meditations.

Chickie,
I have seen a many outpourings of love, admiration and respect, none, however, greater than that afforded George. How DESERVED. How heart-warming. What a wonderful family he leaves, starting with you...a true mensch and a son who is any father's dream and your lovely daughter-in-law, Erin.
Cherish the memories girl!

Dear Chickie and Andrew and Erin,
How stupid was I to think I could get there by 11:15 and still find a seat?
What an extraordinary tribute to an extraordinary man.
Andrew your words were so eloquent, so powerful and so loving. They filled our hearts and our heads.
Dads; I think I am a pretty good one- but I know I could be better . I will never underestimate how important it is to sit on their beds and talk about careers and politics and women and opportunity and life...and just allow them to speak and to feel.
One day you are going to be one amazing dad - you will have learned from the master.
Love,
Brian (and Mary & Peter & Vincent)

Dearest Chickie,
George and I became friends at Papert Koenig Lois...over 30 years ago. Thru all those years, he remained true; he never changed. An amusing, loyal, loving and incredible HUMAN BEING.
My deepest condolences.

To Gizella Klein, Andrew and family,
I remember having dinners and laughs with George years ago when Kristina Brent and I were together in NYU and Ramaz. May his family, his daughter Kristina, and his grandchildren, be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

Chickie: I don't know if you will remember me, but I worked with George at WPIX for many years. I was head of Programming. I read the notice of George's passing and I just had to send this note to you to tell you how sorry I am for your loss and to tell you that although I am gone from WPIX for over 13 years, the memories I have of George are wonderful. He was truly a gem of a guy. Honest, funny, hard working. A joy to work with. He made a positive mark on this world and on the people who he came in contact with. My prayers are with you and your family to give you the strength to get through this difficult time. Sincerely, Julie Alex-Nunnari

From his wisdom, his stories, and his heart-felt appreciation for all things that make Chickie anxious, George inspired us, entertained us, and taught us that every day we have on this earth with our family and loved ones is a blessing and an opportunity to find and create happiness. He was proudest that his son, Andrew, has grown into a smart, independent, caring man who exemplifies the dignity and decency of the Brent family.
