George Williams Obituary

HAMPTON - Our beloved George Herman Williams entered Heaven's gates on Dec. 5, 2003. George was born March 14, 1919, in Mount Vernon, N.Y., to the late George and Carrie Williams. He was the third of that union. Mr. Williams attended elementary school in Mount Vernon before moving to the Bronx in 1935, where he continued his high school education. George joined the Army prior to Pearl Harbor, serving a better part of five years. He was a member of the Anti Air Craft Division, stationed in Hawaii with the 369th division until 1945. He married Gladys Pierce in 1948. From this union two children were produced, Michele Diane and George Jr. George was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church in Mount Vernon from childhood to 1986. In his older adult life, he joined Lutheran Trinity of Locust Manor. He remained a church member and served on the usher board until he moved to Hampton, Va., in 1993, where he joined Resurrection Lutheran Church. George was employed by the United States Post Office for 37 years. He retired in 1978, after 45 years. After retiring, he continued to work in small, private industries until 1987. He leaves to mourn his two children; four grandchildren, Malcolm, Sean, Wesley and Kellen; four sisters; and a host of other family and friends. George was a good son, a caring, loving and concerned father, husband, grandfather and brother. He had deep affection for all the members of his family, his friends and neighbors. Those who knew him and loved him will truly miss him. Viewing will begin at noon Thursday at Cooke Bros. Funeral Chapel. Visitation will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday evening at the chapel. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 765 J. Clyde Morris Blvd. Interment will follow in Parklawn Memorial Park.
