GERALD HALPERN Obituary

HALPERN--Gerald P., May 29, 1928 - November 7, 2022. Jerry Halpern passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on November 7, 2022 at his home in Great Neck, NY. A native of the Bronx, Jerry graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1947 and earned a law degree from Harvard Law School in 1950. A skilled attorney, Jerry's practice spanned a broad reach of causes and issues, including first amendment, human rights, real estate, and home health care, among other pursuits. Jerry was a devoted husband of 61 years to the late Carol Dakelman Halpern, loving father to Matthew (Perrie), Jane (Ronald), and Thomas (Lucy), and adoring grandfather to Madeline (Davide) and Catherine (Andrew). Jerry and Carol loved entertaining friends and family at their home in Springs, East Hampton, attending plays, concerts, and art exhibits, traveling the globe and, in earlier days, hosting friends on their sailboat, the Barcarolle. Jerry's gregarious warmth and generosity will remain forever in the hearts and minds of myriad friends, family, and colleagues from all corners of the earth.

I worked for Jerry for a summer after graduating from high school. He was a very kind, smart and warm person. Very sorry for your loss.

I had the privilege of being Gerry's doctor for many years until I left Long Island in 2007. I looked forward to his office visits because I always learned something from him. He spoke so lovingly about Carol and his children. We shared decision making about how best to manage his health and he never complained about the constraints that Diabetes placed on life.
He was truly a mensch.
