GERARD VARLOTTA

VARLOTTA--Gerard Anthony, of Great Neck, New York, died February 27, 2015 at age 87. Mr. Varlotta was born in lower Manhattan, attended St. Joseph's Parochial School and Stuyvesant High School. He served in the United States Navy and earned a degree in Civil Engineering from New York University. Mr. Varlotta was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied engineering in Europe. He went on to earn his New York State Professional Engineering License and worked for the New York City Department of Water Supply prior to becoming a partner in Clem Construction Corporation. In 1960 he established GDL Construction Corp., then Varlotta Construction Corp., specializing is surface and subsurface construction. After retiring in 1992, he continued to consult for the construction industry. Highlights of Jerry's work included work on the Byrne Arena in the Meadowlands; introduced new technology to New York for repair of water mains that developed into Insutiform Metropolitan; installation of the water mains for the World Trade Center; underground utilities, infrastructure, street and sidewalks for the World Finical Center in Battery Park City; emergency water main repairs for the City of New York for almost 20 years.; and cleanup after the 9/11 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center. Jerry was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He will be remembered as a fair and compassionate human being who has left behind a lasting legacy of many loving friends, former employees and business associates. Jerry is survived by his wife of 58 years., Isabel, his children, Gerard Jr. (Angela), David (Barbara), Laurie (Thomas) and Lynda (Vincent), and grandchildren Michele, Richard, Kristen, Carolyn, Caroline, Christopher, Stephen, and Geena. He will be sorely missed. A private wake will be held at Fairchild Funeral Home, Manhasset, on March 12, 2015 with services on March 13, 2015 at St. Aloysius RC Church in Great Neck, NY. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the following charities: Garden of Dreams Foundation and Boomer Esiason Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis.
