GERRY HOFFMAN

HOFFMAN--Gerry, D.D.S. June 18, 1929-November 20, 2021. Predeceased by wife of 65 years, Lorna, and his brother Charles, and is survived by son Douglas (Deborah), daughters Sharon (Mark) and Linda (Brian), and seven grandchildren. Born and raised in Islip, NY, in his senior year at high school, he was class president, and played halfback on the District Champion soccer team. He left Islip for four years at Syracuse University, where he belonged to Tau Epsilon Phi, four years attending NYU Dental School in New York City and two years of Air Force service in Bryan, TX. After the Air Force, Gerry joined his father's dental practice in Islip. Later, Gerry's daughter, Sharon, and her husband, Mark, joined the practice. Gerry retired at 62 and he and Lorna moved to Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Florida, where they played bridge and tennis. Scouting was important throughout Gerry's life. His parents proudly saw him become an Eagle Scout, with Islip Boy Scout Troop 151, in 1947. Gerry and Lorna saw their son Doug become an Eagle Scout in Islip Troop 151 in 1975, and saw Doug's son, Thomas, become an Eagle Scout in 2009 in New Jersey. Gerry was a founding member of the Islip Rotary Club and was named a Paul Harris Fellow, in recognition of his driving leadership and enthusiasm. Both daughters, Sharon and Linda, spent their junior year of high school in Brazil in the Rotary Youth Exchange Program. Gerry appreciated his friend and aide, Rick Elliott, and especially appreciated the compassion of Dr. David Levey. Donations in his memory can be made to the Israel Tennis Center at www.itecenters.org
