GERTRUDE CONNER Obituary

CONNER--Gertrude Whitney, granddaughter of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and an accomplished painter, died December 13th, 2009 of cancer. Mrs. Conner, or Gerta as she was known to friends, painted dreamlike landscapes since she was 15. She exhibited in a number of galleries and had a solo exhibition at the New York Studio School. She also wrote and illustrated her memoir, Those Early Years. She worked at MOMA for many years, supported the Skowhegan School of Art and The New York Studio School. She was a member of the River Club and the Lotus Club. She is survived by her loving husband McCauley (Mac) Conner, her son, daughter and four grandchildren. She died in her home surrounded by her family. Funeral services Thursday, 11:30am at Frank E. Campbell, 1076 Madison Ave., at 81st. Interment private. In lieu of flowers make donations to the New York Studio School, 8 W. 8th St., New York, NY 10011.

I had the pleasure of meeting Gerta once, introduced by a friend. She embodied an elegance and refinement that seems largely lost to the world today, and I'll remember her for that.
