GILBERT MAURER Obituary

MAURER--Gilbert C. The Board and Staff of the New York Botanical Garden mourn the death of Gilbert C. Maurer. Gil served as a dedicated member of NYBG's Board of Trustees for 34 years, providing invaluable leadership during a critical period in the institution's history. He chaired the Garden's Audit Committee with distinction for many years before being recognized as its Honorary Chair. In his role as Chief Operating Officer and Executive Vice President of Hearst Corporation, Gil established deep connections between the company and NYBG, a relationship that continues today. A lover of the arts and gardening, Gil was instrumental in introducing NYBG to new friends, including those who would go on to serve on the Garden's Board - a group he mentored through wise counsel, good humor, and passionate advocacy. Gil made an indelible mark on this institution and will be deeply missed by the Garden community. We extend our sympathies to Gil's family, friends, and colleagues. J. Barclay Collins II, Chair; Maureen K. Chilton, Chair Emerita; Jennifer Bernstein, CEO & President; Gregory Long, President Emeritus

Mr. Maurer was the very definition of Renaissance man. A true leader, Mr. Maurer guided those with whom he worked with compassion and kindness. Sending my sincerest condolences to his large, loving family.

Gil Maurer believed in my ability to art direct House Beautiful, one of Hearst's premier publications. In turn his wise and gentle guidance gave me the confidence to produce some of my best work. He was teacher, advocate, sounding board and friend, whose opinions mattered beyond the work itself. He was also erudite, charming, a marketing genius and one-of-a-kind. He will be missed.

To the family of Gil & Ann Maurer...........we knew nothing about your parents over the many years we knew them in Palm Beach other than that Gil knew alot about photography and Ann borrowed a pair of long underwear from Dale when she was going somewhere cold and Dale volunteered. Eventually, we learned that Gil had something to do with the Hearst Building in New York and invited us for a tour. Fact is that they were terrific people whose company we simply enjoyed. Our condolences on your loss.
