GLENN DOMAN Obituary

DOMAN--Glenn. Glenn Doman, 93, founder of The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, died on the 18th of May. Doman was world-renowned for his pioneering work with brain-injured children and well children. In 1940 he graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Physical Therapy. Study with Dr. Temple Fay at Temple University Hospital followed. On the day of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Doman enlisted and served as second Lt. Infantry Platoon Leader and Rifle Co. Commander in combat in Europe. He was decorated by George VI with the British Military Cross for outstanding heroism in action. From the U.S. he received the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in combat, the Silver Star for gallantry against an armed enemy, and the Bronze Star for heroism in close combat, and he was nominated for the Congressional Medal of Honor. He was decorated for services to the Duchy of Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge, Doman began pioneering the field of child brain development. In 1955 he founded The Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential with the goal of successfully treating the brain. Doman and Fay believed that the brain had great capacity for recovery. At that time brain-injured patients were routinely warehoused and considered hopeless. Doman insisted, "The brain grows by use." Today the concept of neuroplasticity embraces the work of The Institutes. In the early 1960s, the successful work with brain-injured children led to vital discoveries about the development of well children. Doman authored "The Gentle Revolution Series" for parents, the first of which was "How To Teach Your Baby To Read." Doman taught more than twenty-five thousand families, and he strongly influenced millions of families through the book "What To Do About Your Brain-Injured Child." In 1966 he was knighted by Brazil and received that country's highest decoration, the Knight Order of the Southern Cross. In 2007 he received the Medal of the Italian Senate. He is survived by his wife, children, and grandchildren. His daughter, Janet, and his younger son, Douglas, continue to lead his dedicated staff around the world, ensuring that children both hurt and well continue to get the help they need. Donations may be made to The Founder's Fund at The Institutes, 8801 Stenton Ave., Wyndmoor, PA 19038, or iahp.org.

Glenn was my good friend and I miss him terribly. He was the most moral man I ever met. I was a member of the board of directors of the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential and it was some of the most important work I have ever done.

If you were alive today i would come and see you and let you know after 42 years our son Gary was found to have a genetic disorder and not Oxygen starvation as we all thought. I loved your approach to life and the way you tried to help our son. Rest in peace my friend.

Thank you, Glenn, for your focus and sacrifice in investing yourself in the application of brain principles different from the norm. My daughter walked at 25 months, one month after I took and applied your Human Development course! I hope your methods on comas and so much more will make it to the mainstream. The Institutes remain close in my thoughts, although I visited some 28 years ago.

As an educator and parent, I have bought Glenn's books, watched his videos, and used his famous "Bits of Intelligence" to teach many children in Indiana, including my own, lots of extraordinary things. I have been praised highly for my efforts, but I deflect it all to this brilliant and passionate man who has made the world a much better place for his passing through. God bless your legacy,Glenn Doman. May you rest in peace.

We were at the Institutes 23 years ago. It was one of the best decisions we ever made. I am convinced my son would not be where he is today without Glenn Doman's methods. For some reason, his name crossed my mind today, and I decided to look him up to see if he was still teaching at the Institutes. To my dismay, I saw the obituary. I am so grateful for all he did to change people's lives. May he live on through the thousands of people he has changed!

I was very moved to read of Glenn's passing. My wife and I spent a wonderful week at the Institutes in 1990 after the birth of our first child. We carry a treasured memory of Glenn and Janet teaching us how to delight in the rich experience of participating in our youngster's early development.Glenn's humanity ,compassion, humor were such a positive force every time he entered the room to teach us and recount his anecdotes. He was one of those people we really, really have cause to miss.

So sorry to read that Glenn Doman has passed on. Many years ago I discovered his book, How to Teach Baby to Read, when my children were young. And then in 1991, I used his techniques in healing for my husband following his brain hemorrhage. I wrote to Glenn thanking him for sharing the knowledge he had shared with millions, and he called us. We had a very good conversation. Shortly thereafer he send a signed copy of his book on Brain Injury and invited us to a school session at Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential in Philadelphia. We were honored but unable to arrange that. I have often quoted Glenn Doman to others, shared his book with new parents, and as an author have mentioned him in a couple of our nonfiction books. And his word say so much: “We are persuaded that every child born, at the instant of birth, has a greater potential intelligence than Leonardo da Vinci ever used.” A wonderful man who gave so much to everyone. I'm honored to have known him and his wonderful work. Thank you, Glenn.

Other than the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the most important lessons I learned in life came from you. You turned my fear and sadness to joy and thanksgiving. You turned my family from a dreary life to a vibrant one. My husband and I, our children, and grandchildren thank you.

Thank you for your influence in my life! I am a happy mother of 8 children. I read the book Teach Your Baby to Read when I my first child was 4 years old. I proceeded to teach him to read in three months and from then on it's been a joyful road of discovery together with my children. My youngest is now 9, all my children were educated at home by me, a mother who has dyslexia, they just recently started going to school in their father's home country where they need to learn a new language that has no relation to English. They are all top students in their school! Many thanks for all the wonderful learning years for our family! Lisa Duntavs Saunders
