Mrs. McMahon and Family,
I’m a 1970 graduate of Archbishop Carroll High and did not personally know Gordon, but I don’t think there was not one student at Archbishop Carroll High School that did not know about Gordon McMahon. He was one who was active with just about anything associated with Archbishop Carroll, from fine arts events, our first celebration of earth day, and/or supporting the football team. He was someone who definitely stood out in the crowd. It is apparent from the obituary I read from Archbishop Carroll that Gordon was one who believed in getting involved and giving back. No matter what one’s personal and/or financial status is in life, these two traits truly make a man a man.
Several years ago I was overwhelmed when I read about the financial contribution he made towards the renovation of Archbishop Carroll’s auditorium. It is occurrences like this that makes an individual realize that along one’s path through life, someone has had such an impact on someone’s life that they are influenced to share their success with someone else. It is apparent to see that Gordon’s parents and his association with God almighty were two of his biggest influences.
I’m sorry for not ever knowing him personally and I am both saddened and humbled by his passing. It is events like this that reassure me that he is in a better place with God almighty. It is often questioned, how do you measure the success of a man? I’m pretty sure if anyone needs a measuring device they can start with Gordon McMahon. I know one day I will have the privilege meeting you and getting to know you. May you rest in peace Gordon.
