Harold Hauser Obituary

1944 - 2020
HAUSER, Harold Stanley, Jr. (Hal), age 76 of New York, NY, died peacefully with his wife Agneta by his bedside on December 9, 2020 at Mt. Sinai Hospital, from complications stemming from myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS), a form of blood cancer.

Hal was born in Everett, MA on July 9, 1944 to Dorothy and Harold Hauser, Sr. He completed his undergraduate studies at Northeastern University and upon graduating Hal entered Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI. He served for three years in the U.S. Navy, stationed at Fleet Operations Control Center, Pacific in Honolulu, HI, where he attained the rank of Lieutenant JG. After leaving the Navy, he returned to Boston and attended Boston University, where he earned an MBA. His early career was spent working in marketing for the Carling Brewing Company in Boston and Colgate-Palmolive in New York. In 1988, he started his own market research business, Hauser & Associates, which he ran until he retired in 2013.

An avid traveler, Hal traveled the world both for work and leisure. As a quintessential Upper West Sider, he loved nothing more than a Sunday spent completing the NY Times crossword, planning his next trip with his wife Agneta, and walking his dog in Riverside Park in the neighborhood he adored. As much as he loved NYC, he and Agneta cherished opportunities to spend time outside the city in northern Vermont, where they would often hike, ski, and spend time with their grandchildren.

Hal leaves behind his beloved wife, Agneta Persson; his brother Paul of Manchester, NH; his two children, Amy of Jericho, VT and Eric and his wife Jen of Chicago, IL; his two grandchildren, Spencer and Oliver of Jericho, VT; his newly adopted rescue dog, Sven; as well as countless friends and neighbors in New York. He also leaves behind his beloved "Swedish family" - Oscar, Per, Ola, Fanny, Fredrik, Elisabet and many others across the ocean in Agneta's native Sweden, where they traveled frequently.

Per his wishes, there will be no funeral service. A memorial service may be scheduled for a later date in New York City. Donations in his memory may be made to the MDS Foundation (https://www.mds-foundation.org/donate/).

Hal and Agnetta got married on their beautiful lawn in Ct. Agnetta walked down the aisle with her dear dog, Gustav, on a leash. Thus began an adventure, lasting well over 15 years. Hal and Agnetta traveled, eventually moving back to the UWW, where their apartment was home. Hal, when they drove out to NJ for dinner, was a kind spirit, a deep soul, intense eyes, a warm smile. I was always aware how much Hal loved Agnetta and cherished her.Agnetta and I met in graduate school long ago. Marriage to Hal seemed just what Agnetta needed, here in America, far from Sweden. Hal, you are missed.

Hal was my love , my best friend , my travel companion and much more... . He endured his illness with dignity and without complaining , he was my hero !

“ May the winds of heaven
Blow softly

Beyond missing our warm neighborly friendship, I will miss putting my copy of the Sunday Times magazine each week under my front door mat. I would call Hal and he would retrieve it and he would enjoy doing the Sunday crossword puzzle.

Hal was a wonderful man. I remember most his kindness, and his obvious love for Agneta. We met as friends walking our dogs, both Olaf and now Sven, and the many slow ambles around Riverside Park. I will miss his gentleness and his insights.
