HARVEY KEMP Obituary

KEMP--Harvey Gilbert, Jr., MD, former chief of cardiology at St. Luke's Hospital Center, died at New York Hospital on March 24, 2010, after a short illness. Dr. Kemp was professor of clinical medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and founded the current Division of Cardiology at St. Luke's Hospital Center, where he was in charge from 1970 to 1990. During his medical career, he also was a founding fellow of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions. He was the author of numerous scholarly papers on Cardiology. Graduating from Johns Hopkins University Medical School in 1959, Dr. Kemp finished his Osler internship at Johns Hopkins and then served in the US Air Force in Wiesbaden, Germany, as a medical officer from 1961-63. Returning to the United States, he completed his medical residency at New York Hospital and was chief resident from 1964-65. Following the completion of his studies, Dr. Kemp went to the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston as a fellow, working with Dr. Richard Gorlin until 1970. At this time he was recruited by St. Luke's Hospital Center in New York City to establish their cardiology division and act as its chief. Dr. Kemp was a fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the New York Academy of Medicine, and was a member of the American Heart Association, and the New York State Cardiac Advisory Committee. He was active in the New York Clinical Society and the Medical Strollers. Aside from his medical career, he was a member of the New York Holland Lodge and The Union Club, where he served as a Governor from 1992-1995. Dr. Kemp is survived by Barbara, his loving wife of 30 years; two sons, Christopher and Alexander, of Los Angeles, CA, and their respective wives Beth and Winnie; three step-children, Elizabeth Sundell of Nantucket, MA, Malcolm Chace of Providence, RI, and Barbara Ulehla, Wilton, CT, and nine step-grandchildren. Services will be held on Friday, April 16th at The Church of the Incarnation at 11am, followed by a reception at The Union Club, 101 Park Ave. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to the American Heart Association at 122 East 42nd St., New York, NY 10036.
