HELENE KAPLAN

KAPLAN--Helene. The Barnard College community mourns the passing of Helene Kaplan '53, a remarkable alumna and former chair of our Board of Trustees (1983-1993). She was a trailblazing attorney and generous philanthropist who demonstrated strong leadership at many of the nation's most respected foundations and institutions, including Barnard College, the American Museum of Natural History, the Bretton Woods Committee, the Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Commonwealth Fund, the Council on Foreign Relations, the J. Paul Getty Trust, and Mount Sinai School of Medicine. Her wise counsel will be greatly missed. She carved new paths for women, and was the first woman to lead a number of corporate boards. Barnard cherishes its long and beautiful relationship with Helene. She loved the College even before she joined us as a first-year student back at the age of 16 years old, and over the last 73 years she contributed so much to its mission of educating young women and empowering them to pursue their passions.
