I was distressed to hear that Herb passed. I worked with him daily quite a few years ago when Global was sold to the company I was working for. In the years that we worked together I grew to respect Herb more than I can express in this short note. He was a mentor and always seem to make the big issues seem smaller in context. I enjoyed very much hearing his stories about the "FROZEN FOOD" pioneering days and how Sysco was founded. I am very proud to have been part of Herb's being nominated and accepted into the "FROZEN FOOD HALL OF FAME" a number of years back. Along with another mentor Mr. Frank Cassata we were able to get Herb the recognition that was justly deserved by the industry he was so much a part of. I lost touch with Herb after we moved the company back to New Jersey. I enjoyed talking with him and getting some "Fatherly" advice he was always willing to offer. He always referred to me as "kid". I was in my late 40's and early 50's. I truly regret having lost touch with him but will always remember him and know that I am a better person for knowing him. It is also at this time I remember that he and Florence had their wedding anniversary this month.
To Mrs. Irving... my deepest condolences to you and your Family. He was a wonderful man to me and I will always remember him with respect and gratitude. May he rest in peace.

Our deepest sympathies to Florence and the Irving family. Columbia University and New York Presbyterian have lost a great benefactor, but my wife Barbara and I have lost a wonderful friend, mentor, and role-model. May we all be blessed, as Herb Irving was, with the drive to support and nourish the next generation of physicians, scientists, and all those trying to improve the world. May we be endowed, as Herb Irving was, with the desire to share our good fortune with others so that they might flourish and be successful in their own endeavors. May we all be fortunate enough to spend more than seven decades with a partner we love dearly. We will miss him so much, but we will always be grateful that we were fortunate enough to be members of Herb and Florence's extended family.
