HERBERT RUBIN Obituary

RUBIN--Herbert, age 105+, died at home on Monday, October 30, 2023 surrounded by family. Through his actions more than by any pronouncements, he taught us how to live a humane life of commitment to others. Born of immigrant parents (Simon and Rose Berko Rubin), he attended CCNY during the tumultuous years of 1934-1938. Herb was proud of his CCNY pedigree, and was a recent recipient of the school's Townsend Harris award. Herb attended the evening division at NYU Law School while maintaining a fulltime day job. Number 1 in his class, Herb became the only evening student ever named Editor-in-Chief of the NYU Law Review. He was an enthusiastic supporter of NYU Law, establishing the Justice Rose L. Rubin and Herbert Rubin International Law Symposium, Professorship, and Library. Following Army service in WWII, Herb founded the law firm Herzfeld & Rubin. In addition to the New York trial and appellate courts, he argued in virtually all of the federal Circuit Courts of Appeal as well as the US Supreme Court, where he set precedent about jurisdiction that still holds. Herb was a member of the NYS Banking Commission, the New York City Commission on the City Charter, served as President of the Queens County Bar Association and in many other civic capacities. He served on the Board of Governors of Northwell Health (and predecessors) for over 40 years. Herb played an active role in shaping New York's judiciary. He was a member of Senator Schumer's and Senator Moynahan's Judicial Screening Committees and the New York City Mayor's Committees on Judicial Selection for 25 years. He actively promoted equitable representation of women on the bench. Herb supported Jewish life as a benefactor to NY-UJA and a 50-year congregant at the Conservative Synagogue of 5th Ave. Herb showed by example what it means to be a loving partner. He felt supremely privileged to share more than 75 years of marriage with his law school sweetheart, Justice Rose Luttan Rubin, of blessed memory. He was predeceased by siblings Harold Rubin and Ruth Czeisler. Herb was the beloved father of Barbara Brown Cooper (Peter), Caroline Temlock Teichman (Marc), and Don Rubin (Carol). He was the grandfather of eight, great-grandfather of 17, and dear uncle to six. Beyond family, he touched multitudes of people with his wisdom and support. Donations in his memory can be made to UJA of New York, Conservative Synagogue of Fifth Ave., or NYU Law School Rubin International Law fund. Funeral services will be Wednesday, November 1, 2023 at 1pm at the Plaza Jewish Community Chapel.

Mr. Rubin was truly a remarkable man as a father, husband, grandfather, great grandfather, friend and lawyer. He helped my husband and I through a very difficult time and will always hold a special place in our hearts and in our memories.

Herb Rubin was a giant in the legal community. Due in no small part to his tireless efforts championing female judicial candidates, the federal benches in New York City are gender-balanced and far more diverse than ever before. Herb Rubin was a role model within the legal community as someone who was wise, compassionate, and decent, and who gave so much of his time to make a lasting and meaningful impact not only on the legal community, but on our society.

Herb was an indispensable part of my life for almost thirty years as a colleague, friend and mentor. He was a pillar of wisdom who's life was marked by a profound commitment to uplifting and shaping the futures of countless individuals. Herb understood the power of knowledge, and he dedicated his life to sharing it generously. He help me navigate challenges, overcome obstacles, and achieve dreams. It was my great privilege to have called him my friend.
